I see a guy on the Bay has 5 Barco Genesis 7064 CRT PJs and they look huge, and the CRTs themselves almost look like 12" units.

Anyone ever see these??

Hello

Don't let Curt see this, he'll want them!!! LOL

Those are likely out of a flight simulator. They are in "stoplight" mode, so raster is turned 90 degrees from normal. And the lenses are very purpose built, not likely to work in a HT setting.

The tubes look to be an AC setup. Or am I missing something?

Yep, AC raster/calligraphics projectors. Tubes are LUG's and have wear, but they offer another 31 LUG's. Some of them new, never used but mounted in AC housing.
So except for the tubes, nothing useful for us mortals...

I'd be interested in a set of the lenses but only if they were cheap. Optics is a hobby of mine and I would have no issue with having
a set of every kind of lenses that can be mounted on a 9" tube assembly.

I've worked with these. They are simulator projectors (if they are the same ones I've had, then they are designed for small curved screens. The guts are unlike any other projector Barco made, and while the set I had was missing all the tubes, I think they were LUGs. Totally useless for HT, and totally useless as parts units for all the CRTs we're familiar with.

The price has dropped. I wonder if they will break it up if it doesn't sell. The tubes would be worth grabbing if the price is right.

If I may - what disqualifies these as HT projectors? And what makes a "simulator" projector exactly?

Very curved screen lenses for one. With the one I had, the tubes were missing, it ran off 220 volts, and weighed at least 350 lbs if not more. I got mine for $150 plus about $300 shipping, but it ended up being a $500 paperweight. Exceptionally well built though. Not sure what the specs were overall for it though.

These are raster-calligraphic projectors. which operate in two separate display modes of operation.

They draw a regular raster, and then, during the retrace cycle, which is only a few microseconds in duration between frames, they switch into calligraphic mode.

Calligraphic mode....remember the classic old Atari arcade games such as Tempest, Battlezone, Red Baron, and Lunar Lander? Those are games that run in vector mode. They are not raster scanned, the internal processor commands the deflection circuits to directly move the electron beam from point to point to point without generating a raster scanned field.

Raster caliligraphic projectors do the same thing but rather than trace lines like those games, they are used to brightly illuminate specific points on the image, creating bright lighting over the image. This is used to give a very realistic effect to the rendering of runway and taxiway lights and street lights as seen from the simulated aircraft point of view.

Properly done, the effect is remarkably realistic and has a very different feel to it than conventionally scanned simulation imagery.

The catch is that to have that ability to control the beam location with such speed and authority, the deflection amplifiers need
to be extremely powerful. Typically their drive output to the deflection coils is on the close order of 1000 watts per deflection circuit, and there are both vertical and horizontal deflection systems for EACH of the three CRTs.

This enormous power requirement carries with it a need to dissipate a great deal of heat and that means a lot of cooling, so they have a very significant amount of fan noise plus lots of generated heat. In fact I am not aware of any raster-calligraphic projector that does not run on at least 240 volt power. They require too much power to run them on 120.

So their application for home theater is pretty much zero. You'd never tolerate the heat and the noise and it's not like even their video signal connections are anything standard. (They're not.)

Neat, yes, but for home theater, they're not even worthy of consideration.

This could get interesting I hear someone might fly over and inspect the tubes.
