I'm in the process of rebuilding my downstairs theater, so things are going to be torn apart far enough where I will be able to access the guts of the walls, ceiling and floor. What should I be looking at in the way of CRT placement, wires, screen... I did it once before with a ceiling mounted PJ. Is there a cool way of putting the PJ on the floor?

Hello

If on the floor a low table should do it. Consider cutting a channel in the floor to hide wires.

Check out the 'gallery' on the main site, it should give you some ideas.

I'd trench a conduit in, maybe 2" in diameter. What happens in 5 years from now when HDMI goes by the wayside, and optical is the way to go? (I'm guessing only here). With a conduit, you can add/remove anything.

I don't know of a cool way to put the pj on the floor. You could put it behind the seating. By pointing the pj vertically and bouncing the image off a first surface mirror, you can keep it out of the way.

Yeah

But the room will look like crap with a mirror unless it's up near the ceiling and concealed some.

A mirror really opens a lot of options, placement, throw distance. Will they degrade the image. That was one thing I was worried about, having enough distance to the screen.

Yeah, some pipes both ceiling and floor connecting the entertainment center/HTPC with the PJ would be smart.

One idea was to place a seat on top the PJ. On a platform of course.

What about storage, I will have several extra PJ's that will need a good home, if not a spot so they can project. One on the ceiling, one on the floor for the main screen. A second screen on a different wall, maybe.

What about a PJ in a different room, upstairs, projecting down to a mirror, then to the screen? Noise from the PJ would be a non issue then. Interesting...

Guys

I have worked with the mylar plastic mirrors many times and they are cheap and light weight but they are never perfectly flat and can lead to focus issues.

Glass first surface mirrors show up now and then when rear/mirror CRT installations get torn out. A new one is rather expensive, if you can find a new one.

Put the projector under a custom made coffee table. Nobody even knows you have one when you have a pull down screen. Very Happy

What about stripping the paint off a mirror, to reveal the first surface. I watched a youtube video and it looks pretty straight forward. What about PJ TV's in the cabinet, do they use mirrors?

Too bad, I just junked my Barco retro 808. It had a HUGE optical grade mirror in it, and there was zero distortion with it.

The big old rear projector TVs usually have good mirrors in them and there's always a bunch of free ones on craigslist.

At one time I was thinking of putting the old Sony 1020 PJ under the bed and projecting to the ceiling above bounced off a mirror, but I was worried about creating a fire hazard so never did it. I had one of those horrible resolution toy PJ's mounted on a headboard but image quality and fan noise were problems. Do they make LED projectors without a fan these days?

RPTVs have first surface mirrors as was mentioned.

While the coffee table method is ok, the screen size is limited. As a point of reference, at a 10' seating distance the pj would be around 7' from the screen. That leaves you around a 65" screen.

Mine is 60" x 80". Running HD material at 16 x 9 = 92" diagonal. Very Happy

That is why I was thinking of having the seating over the top of the PJ. Build a platform to enclose the PJ and have the seats on top of the platform.

If you put the PJ on the floor, the very best possible viewing spot will not be available to you, because that's the projector's location.
