When should the battery on the CLM be changed out, mine measures just below 2.5 volts. What problems can a low battery cause, besides losing settings?

Hello
The CLM battery, a 3 volt Renata device, powers two chips that store settings such as convergence and geometry. The battery lets the CLM hold these settings if AC power to the projector is interrupted.
I would change out that battery. Changing the battery will dump settings. You will lose most of the settings in the projector unless you download to a PC using Marquee Librarian or similar app. There are no other hazards of a low battery that I am aware of.

It's time. It's a nominal 3 volt battery and when it drops much below 3 volts, it's due for replacement.
I actually will be checking mine out in a few days. I replaced it 10 years ago so it has to be nearing the end of its life.

I THINK it's a Renata 175-1.
Bad news, though...if that's right, they're obsolete.
For those who don't know it, the battery is the orange square block on the CLM. It is clearly marked.
The earliest CLMs have a larger battery. 500, I think.
Fortunately, if you can't get the correct battery, it isn't difficult to find a retrofit that can be substituted.
It's only a 3 volt battery. It's not like you can't find small 3 volt lithium cells and attach wires to them.

What would they cost today. I have a bunch of them new that was purchased for a job site I maintained. I could let a few go. They are the smaller sized newer ones, that fit just like the older ones

It's a 175-0 type, OR, if the CLM is REALLY old, it's a 500-0 type which is MUCH larger.
The 175 is about 7/8" square, the 50 is about 1 and 1/4" square.
If they're still good batteries with a full charge, given that they're no longer being made, you can get whatever the
market will bring for them. I have no clue if that's 5 dollars or 50 dollars.
I have a small stash of them, which I just dug out and tested.
Out of 8 batteries, one was DEAD, reading zero volts. The other 8 are at 3.3 volts where they should be.
I took apart the dead one and saw that all a 175 battery is made of is a 3 volt coin cell with leads attached,
and encapsulated in clear epoxy. This dead one had obvious corrosion damage in the edge of the cell itself,
so it was probably a manufacturing defect.

Hi,
Here's another idea: Get a battery holder for a CR2025 or CR2032 battery, the battery itself and solder it in instead of the Reanata block. That'll give You a working and final solution for years. As soon as You find out that the battery is nearing its EOL, just replace it. I've equipped most of my CLMs with this and it works flawlessly. If You're fast enough with the battery change, not even the settings get lost...
Regards,

Or solder some wires on the backside, apply 3V (power supply, other batteries or whatever) to it while you desolder the renata and solder in a new battery/ battery holder.
You can then desolder or just cut the additional wires again.
