SPRINT ANNOUNCES A COMMERCIAL DATA INTERNET SERVICE
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 22, 1992 -- Sprint today announced
commercial availability of SprintLink(sm), the first commercial
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based
data transmission service offered by a national long distance
carrier. SprintLink is a router-based network supporting the
TCP/IP protocol suite for data communications.
SprintLink is part of the company's expanding service to the
business, scientific and research communities. It complements
Sprint's frame relay and SprintNet(R) (X.25) services for computer
and local area network (LAN) interconnection. SprintLink also
provides access to the Internet, a group of about 8,000
interconnected data networks in more than 80 countries serving
government, academic and research organizations.....

It is amazing how far we have come in such a short time until I realize that 1992 was 24 years ago and while I do not think of myself as old I am now part of the fifty-f*cking-something crowd.

It *IS* last century and it WAS a looong time ago. And my birthday was 3 years earlier! I barely qualify for Wan's fifty-f*cking-something crowd. Actually I qualify for the fifty-f*cking-nobody crowd....

I love how they have to explain what the internet is.
I remember when I got my first modem, connecting to BBSs, it instantaneously expanded my universe from just my PC to dozens of others I could reach in my local calling area and I thought "wow - this is unreal".
Then the internet came around and all of a sudden my range went from dozens of different computers to basically millions (well thousands in that day) with no long distance changes. This completely flabbergasted me.

My first modem was 300 baud on my Colecovision Adam computer. It was neat to dial up and talk to people on the computer. Just like in "War Games". When the internet came along I felt a loss. A loss of the, for lack of a better description, way of life of the direct dial in BBS. They all started to go away. It was sad.

I really miss the trust and openness of the early/pre-Internet days. When the 'net was just a bunch of Unix systems passing email around via modem, it was a lot kinder, gentler, and more honest. There were no spammers, scammers, flamers, and other Internet trolls.
