Disconnect the cable input from the VCR and see if a VHS tape shows the lines.

You need a cable ground isolator. eBay has them, or a good local satellite company should carry them. Insert that into the cable line, problem solved.

Well I bought a cable ground isolator. I hooked it to the Direct tv cable, then to the Direct tv box.
I don't get a picture and it says "searching for signal"
Plug the cable in by itself & it works fine??? I don't know

Is Direct TV satellite or cable? If satellite, then yes, one of those won't work. Call DirectTV and tell them that you need to ground isolate the audio and video signals coming in from the receiver, and see if they have a solution. You'll need to talk to a tech, not their first line tech support people.
