I hope I am not the only one to experience loss of picture on my Barco BG808s as I'm looking for helpful advice

My BG808s has been doing strange things lately and I wonder if I need some of Doctor EDID's devices - My video chain is simple and consists of a Pioneer AVR with HDMI connected Pioneer BD Player and HDMI connected HD-DVD Player plus Analogue inputs from VHS and Laserdisc Players.
The Projector is connected to the AVR's HDMI output with an HDMI to DVI cable feeding a Mk1 HD Fury D to A converter

1 Compact Fluorescent Lighting blocks the PJ remote sensor so remote will not operate BUT sometimes the PJ will Switch ON by itself as if the lighting had somehow triggered it.

2 If I turn the CF lights OFF to Switch the PJ ON - then load ANY disc in the BD Player - so the AVR switches to BD via the HDMI Link - I get a picture from the DISC MENU but when I select the MOVIE or a Trailer or whatever - the Picture Blanks as the Player changes Tracks - and OFTEN the picture doesl NOT come back even though the selected Track is now Playing

3 When the Picture gets "lost" in this way - The PJ is still ON and running but NO button on the RC will make the picture come back - Neither will switching OFF / ON the BD or AVR - its as if the PJ has some how been put into an unresponsive "Standby" mode

4 The ONLY way to get the Picture back is to use the RC Standby to Switch the PJ OFF - then use it again to Switch the PJ back ON

Could it be that the Video is being blocked or Lost because of some sort of EDID problem ? and if it is the case why do I have to switvh OFF the PJ before I can get a picture back ? I wold have thought that Video must have aready been present at the PJ for it to be shown when the PJ is back ON

Any thoughts from more experienced CRT users will be greatly appreciated

Check the red light on the EHT board to see if it comes on. If so, your HV splitter or quadrupler is bad and has nothng to do with the input signal.

Many thanks for that suggestion Curt - for some time I had been suffering friom a low level flicker on the Blue Tube but then a while back there was a crack from an HT Flashover and the problem just went away - so I assumbed a delinquent Spider had been fried as everything seemed to be working OK

Can you just clarify for me if you think the EHT / Scan Protection might be operating on EHT variations caused by the sudden Loss of video sync which occurs when the BD Player drops the previous track and searches for the next Trailer / Unwanted Track before it eventually reaches the actual Movie ?

The reason I ask you for clarification is simply that after I have restarted the PJ to get the picture back from the blanked state - I can then watch good pictures from the DVD / BD Player without any obvious problems for as long as it takes - - - until I next change the Disc and have to go through the unwanted Menu / Trailer Tracks searches again - so I had not realy considered that there might be a PJ problem

One other thing which I can see in Dark Scenes is a sort of random flicker in Black Level - I had not seen any reference to this problem from other Posts until recently when I found that one member had referred in his Post to "That well known Barco Black Level Problem" so I presume this minor annoyance to an otherwise good picture is just one of the Barco characteristics.

No, the HV/EHT should be solid regardless. Failure of the HV section is very common now that the sets are older.

As Curt asked does the EHT fail led come on when you loose the picture?
If not when you loose the picture does the projector still show its menu? If so does the sync light on the sync vertical board come on when you loose the picture?
Are you using port 3 or port 5?

Hi

I have not been able to get at the ceiling mounted PJ to check the EHT LED yet - I will do this soon - but as I said before the Picture is fine after the PJ has been restarted - EHT is clearly present and stable while the video stream is not interrupted by changing DVD's etc or in the case of BD discs by the video format changing between lo-res trailers and the main HD content So when the Picture is Lost - the Text button doesn't show scan information and the Setup button doesn't show any Menus

Tonight the PJ switched on by itself with the information page on screen - this was some time after I had turned up volume on a CD - so I am beginning to wonder if the PJ is somehow sensitive to AF vibrations ? some time later I put on a DVD and this played Trailers and Feature with no problems - all the DVD tracks being the same video format - I then changed the DVD and had to restart the PJ after it blanked changing tracks rom the DVD Setup Menu to the Feature

I use Port 3 via an original HD-Fury and PSU but as I have many old movies I stick to 1080i on a 4x3 screen - so that Full Frame material is always on screen - eg 4x3 segments of discs - and the wide screen content is shown in letter boxed mode

In this way I don't need to change PJ settings to watch my older films - except that is - for the new DVD transfers of 4x3 material which now throw basic Video Specs out of the window and accommodate the 16x9 format by wasting horizontal resolution to incorporating Vertical Letterbox Bars - so now I have old DVD's that are fine but my New DVD's only give me a Postage Stamp of a Picture with Bars all round - Wide Screen material still reverts to full width video and fills the screen OK

I have found that port 3 doesn't like positive sync. Maybe the switching is confusing the sync circuit. Can you get a lead and try port 5? D15 to 5 x BNC cables are an easy to pick up.
