|
|
I was going to post my set of Barco 909 focus coils in the For sale section today, because I've swapped out the projector and have moved my ceiling mounted Marquee to being my test bed unit.
But instead of also swapping the focus yokes, I left the stock Marquee focus yokes on the installed Marquee. And after watching and tweaking, I'm more than convinced that I should have swapped those coils.
The focus on the newer Marquee with LUG tubes is worse than what was on the unit it replaced. What was really worse was when increasing the contrast. The 909 coils caused barely any bloom on the lines, while the newer unit with the new LUG tubes bloomed terribly.
So I'll not be selling those coils. They will be going into the newer Marquee sometime in the future.
After experiencing this, I'm convinced that the LUG's will not perform well with Stock Marquee focus coils. I've changed a set of tubes last year in a Marquee 9500 that had LUG tubes in it, but remembered that it also had the 909 coils, so nothing jumped out at me.
If you have a really high performance Marquee with LUG tubes, you'll do so much better by either getting a set of 909 or even the 1292 coils for best performance.
Check with Curt to see if he has the 909 coils..

I was wondering if 1209s coils could be used as frankenyokes as well. Any experience on those?
Regards, Julian

Good to read this confirmation. I swapped the Thomson coils out for the 1292 coils without proper comparing. It just seemed the 1292 yokes produced a brighter spot and without the centring problems they where easier to handle. Good to read that they are indeed better.
I tried the 909 yokes but had to little adjusting range. Later I read in the Focus thread that you adjusted a resistor value in the static focus line to get more range. Might try that in the future.
To anyone making there own Frankenyokes, you can get the molex connectors and pins at Mouser. See the Frankenyoke thread. I first made the wiring with soldering contacts but after some time lines broke loose. I advise to use the Molex connectors.

I cut wires with connectors from a marquee set and soldered them to the 909 coils. I'll post a picture later showing where to connect things.
It's been awhile I've had a set of the 1292 coils, with the only thing I remember about them is s better controlled focus, even when increasing the contrast.

Yes I did with 809 yokes that I think are the same as 1209 yokes. there was not enough range so either the permanent magnets where off or the range should be changed on the focusboard. But every set is different in the permanent magnets I guess so try.

Is this LCP or LUG tubes you are speaking of, redfox? (I don't know if they are different in length).

I have LCPs (and LPBs which are the same length) here. I'll figure it out if the mechanical part would work with the 1209s coils.
Thanks for the info.
