|
|
So as a permanent ode to Cliff, I am going to do a triple stack.
Ever since I put in my two 909s, I've been bitching about drifting between the two. I inherited a decent 720p digital, but hadn't gotten to installing it, to use as a reference test pattern via the Lumagen and an HDMI splitter for the 909s.
So then I got in a Sony Qualia 004 that I just couldn't fix the power supply in for some reason. The customer took his bulb back, and all I initially wanted was to get the set going as a test chassis for the power supplies that fail in these. I spent many hours chasing the power supply issue, so it pissed me off enough to buy a second dead set, with a bulb, to potentially use as the alignment reference projector. I couldn't get that one going either, so last week I bought a third. That one I got going, which I then used to troubleshoot the other ones. I now know what is wrong with all of them, so I'm ordering more parts. One of these sets only has 900 hours on the original bulb, and looks fantastic (without black levels!), so it's going to be bolted inbetween my two 909s.
That would put me at roughly 3600 lumens on my 10' wide screen.
As Cliff would have said...... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA!
I guess I'll have to have a meet after all!

Hmm, 3 qualia PJs, do a qualia triple stack
Glad you managed to get yourself a working one Curt, I still have to get my board sent off to you some day, but right now im scoping a NIB qualia 004, hopefully I win it, if I do, I'll use that one while getting the other one repaired.
Good job on finding a fix to them all

Those qualia have a xenon lamp? I had a vw100 beside blacklevel best digital I had. Sold to a guy that searched a vw100 because of the 3d effect. I told him I have crt now even more 3d effect without glases Now 3 909's that should be 9d

Yep, got 4 spares sitting here though Figured even though my qualia is inoperable that it wouldn't hurt to stockpile xenon lamps
Nice to know I will have slightly less competition on this one I really really need to to get my damn qualia done, its on the list, just so damn much to do that I have no time for my own stuff hardly!

Hmm, I may need to buy a spare bulb. One projector here didn't come with one. do you know the hour counts on them? While we're at it, do you have a spare remote? None of my sets came with them. Am about to buy one on eBay, ditto for a ceiling bracket.

No idea what the hours are on them, and they are bare bulbs pulled from Christie lamp housings. One of them is what I threw in my qualia before it stopped running completely (not related to the bulb ). For what its worth they all look like they *should* have a few hundred hours on them at least, maybe more, but again I can't be sure since I didn't pull them right out of projectors.
No spare remote, and sure wish I did have the ceiling bracket! If I do win the 2nd one then I'm sure I'll have a spare remote

Oh, I also wanted to add, 2 of the bulbs I have are the 700 watt xenons, (one in my qualia & 1 spare). The other 2 are 420 watt xenons, but physically identical - and they do work just fine in the qualia, had no problems with them, they just aren't as bright, but the color, shadow detail, vividness, etc... was still just as good with the lower wattage lamps.
if you are interested in one, the 420w bulb would be the much cheaper way to go of course

Interesting on the bulbs, but I need a full housing for the one spare set. I'll just use it as a test projector for now. I watched the repaired one for a few minutes. Nice pix, but lack of blacks.. bleh! Still, only using it as a test pattern reference display for 30 minutes each month tops, and I should get 10 years out of the Qualia. I'll find a ceiling bracket on eBay..

The design of the Qualia is great.
You can also use the VW200. The Qualia is an oldtimer

Yes, but I HAVE the Qualia.
What started the Qualia thing was just the interest in finding out why I couldn't get the one power supply going. that's why I now have three. Yes, I am a hoarder!

Curt,
I would think a single chip DLP would be a better pj for CRT setup. I know you see rainbows, but I doubt you would have an issue with static test patterns.

I agree with spanky on that actually, DLP tends to be sharper and better black levels. Though, most of whats out there has better blacks than the qualia by now The qualia still has superb color and brightness though, can't complain about that one bit!
still... 3 qualias to play with, that is awesome

Lets not get out of hand. Curt already has a unit he wants to use. If he wanted to spend money on a another projector he'd have a lcos. But part of this game is playing with unique stuff that you already have or soon to have expensively.

Why exactly do I care about black levels out of a digital? While I will try running a triple stack for a bit, my two 909s give me PLENTY of brightness, both are rolled way back from what one normally runs on, so I sure don't need the Qualia for extra brightness. It's there for reference geometry test pattern calibration only.
I sure can't afford the $2.00 an hour run time costs of a Qualia bulb either!

Wow! Can I ask how big Cliff his screen was? It seems huge on the pictures.

Same size, 10' wide, 6' high. I'm sitting a bit further back than 10' as Cliff's first row was, I'm about 13' back.
