|
|
Hi all,
I recently picked up a NEC PG10 and when trying to start it up I am getting an F8 error code on the display. The set powers on for maybe 2 seconds and then quickly shuts off, it tries again over an over until after about 8 attempts to start, it puts the error code on the display.
I understand this is typically the C Drive (convergence board). So I pulled the CP connector off the convergence board and tried to power the unit up. with the connector unplugged the set lasted a few seconds longer, maybe 5 or 6 seconds, but then it still went back to standby and started looping on 6 seconds, standby, on 6, standby ..... and the same error code F8 came up.
So is this really the convergence board? I thought with the CP connector unplugged it would bypass that board all together? The only spare part that I have is a "new" (unused from 2006 ) power supply, which I can try (but I did not swap it yet).
Some work has been done to this 10PG, it has a Fan Mod with extra wires / caps soldered to some of the boards, along with a small diy circuit board that connects to the Fans. I'm guessing it could be an issue with bad Caps, as I do not think the unit was recapped, but I'm not sure, some of the caps look different. It was taken down from the prior owner in working condition, calibrated and everything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Bad convergence output board (less likely in a 10PG than in other sets due to a more open chassis), or bad caps on any board including the convergence output board.
Not sure if you sent me an email, but I've been out of town, and am answering today. I'll say the same thing here as I will the email.... I've got SOME PG board left, including convergence boards that I'll literally give away for the cost of shipping, but I no longer support PG sets due to the massive failure rates of the capacitors. I therefore can't test any boards that you'll get from me, but generally I don't keep bad boards. It's been at least 5 years though since any boards I have left were put on the shelf, just FYI.

Also, to me, any fan mod is a really BAD idea in any PG set since they run really hot in the first place. My advice would be to take it out.

Curt,
Thanks for the reply! I did send you an email regarding this earlier in the week. I would take any PG boards compatible with the PG10 (not sure how interchangeable they are between say a PG 6 / 9 / 10 ).
My soldering skills are "ok" not great, but I can try to recap some of the boards, having a spare of anything would be great! I'm in the US zip 19606, if we can work out a price for shipping and such, I will gladly take the untested boards. I feel like these parts are scarce enough that If I pass up a chance to get them now they may not be available again. And I would like to run this projector for a few years if possible (tubes look excellent, low hours on the unit overall).

Within the PG series, they are interchangeable. they are not interchangeable with the PG+ or PG Xtra. There are some differences in the deflection board, some end up having pincushion or keystone issues, but you won't damage anything.
I'm wading through emails now, will respond, and can ship Tuesday as I have to zip out of town again from Sat to Monday.
