I'm just about ready to paint the HT. I'll need a good quality soft carpet with a thick underpadding that can withstand heavy traffic and shoes being worn on it. It need to be easy to clean ( some say avoid burber ) and maintain.
What do you guys reccomend?

As for me, yes get away from berber! We had some in our townhouse a few years back. Once the stuff got dirty, forget it. It wont come clean. Never again.
I have heard that one of the major things to invest in is the padding. Once the padding goes, the carpet is right behind it.

I was told the same thing from the prez of a flooring company I set up a network for...spend until it hurts when it comes to padding as long as you pair it with a decent quality tight nap carpet. He told me he's still amazed that people will spend a ton on quality carpeting and yet cheap out on the pad despite his warnings to the contrary. They think he's just trying to sell them something they don't need.

Well the building relies on the foundation. Why would carpet be any different?

Like Greg says, so many people spend on the carpet and it's looks and skimp on the padding.
Most people say, "Foundation, nobody can see that. Who cares. Just make the stuff I can see look good."

my home inspector told me to get the cheapest carpet and the BEST underlay for the basement.
Good underlay makes cheap carpeting feel good. so get carpeting that looks good. and put it on good underlay.

Good advice I'd say Joust. I've seen cheap carpet thrown directly on hardwod floor and it looks cheap. I can immagine however if it had a nice pad to cushion it people would think it a much nicer carpet.
