Hi!

I would like to replace standard TAC3 (plastic) HD6 lenses of my Sony 1031q with HD145. Do you know if it is a direct replacement (the same mount and focal length)? Position of the projector and screen size are fixed, so it is important for me to obtain the same picture size.

HD145 is colour filtered, so i will replace tinted glycol with clear one.

Thank you.

Yes they are and they are so much better.
I had a 1031 many years ago where I changed the Tac lenses for HD145.
Much better focus and much better colors.

I'm sorry, but after disassembling the projector, it turned out it has Delta HD6 lenses. So now question is: is HD145 direct replacement of HD6, and is it worth replacing?

I have two 1031's and one of them has "Delta HD6" Lenses, and the other "HACC-HD6". These sets look the same. Is there any differennce between these two?

I believe HD6 and HD145 have the same mounting.
The colour filtering is a huge benefit so it is still worth the change IMHO.

It depends if the HD145 cost you any money, personally I wouldn't spend much on a HD145 for a sony 1031... the HD145 alone worth much than the whole sony, and I don't think you'd notice much difference anyway, in fact I saw very little improvement from HD6 to HD145 on my NEC 6PG xtra, which is a way much sharper machine.

The red colour in a Sony 1031 is improved a lot with HD145. As did a Barco data 600 and an ECP4100 I have tried them on. Regadless of sharpness.

There is a difference, they will fit straight on, and they are much sharper in the corners than HD6, the center focus is reasonably simular. Throw distance for 145s is about the same as the 6s, the HD144s have a shorter throw.

If youre using most of the tubeface with that Sony and running it at 1080i, you should certainly see an improvement if your tubes are up to the task, being ES focus they soften over time even if they arent badly worn. I put new 07MS tubes in one of my Sony 1001 sets years ago and it was razor sharp compared to the other set that has minimal wear.

Thank you for your comments.

I have got two 1031q's. One is quite worn, but still useable, and the other one is brand new (new old stock?). I bought it new and it is now < 1000hrs. It still smells like new equipment. This way i can compare worn and new es tubes and there is huge difference on test patterns, but i can still enjoy watching movies on the older one. Overall sharpness is is a lot worse, and light output is greatly reduced.

I'm still not sure if HD145 will be reasonable upgrade (fot the new unit), because sharpness is quite good with HD6. I'm using 720x576p from htpc and scan lines are visible in the corners, so i'm not sure if i need more sharpness.

The lenses are more expensive than much better PJ, but i'm used to it, and my wife loves it and she didn't accepted an upgrade (i wanted to buy barco 808s). She treats our Sony aa a family member, who shared many great moments with us Wink

If the HD 145 turn out to be no direct replacement, i can offer you my HD6C ML, wich are HD 6 color filtered.
I live in Germany, shipping would not be that expensive.
Regards, Julian

The 145s ARE a direct replacement. They fit the same as TAC3, TAC4, HD6, and HD144.

The Sony 1031 will be considerably more reliable than a Barco 808s...

Yeah it will, that is true, but since owning a Barco and knowing how bloody unreliable they can be, if he is happy with the 1080i from that bullet proof reliable Sony id stick with that Wink

A gold rule: if something works don't poke around it, it only gets worse... Smile
By the way all of my NECs had small issues time to time, my friend's barco too, my other friend's marquee on the other hand is rock solid, but of course this is a small sample survey...

Yeah mate both my NECs have been bullet proof too, but on the whole theyre more complex and more likely to fail. Those Sonys are so damn basic there isnt much to go wrong.

My experience so far with both the Cine 9 and the 909 is they like quads, and theyre not cheap to buy. Ive had two die the past 12 months and my last one is failing as we speak.

Why not try rebuilding the quad?

I can rebuild it electrically, but i have no means of potting it. That is the issue.

What is the potting material?
