I was thinking about buying a blu ray player because my ps3 is to old and I was thinking that my Macbook pro 2011 model did not play blu ray without stutters.

Well I was wrong. Today I downloaded a full blu ray again 23GByte and mounted the Iso on the normal way on a Mac and than tried VLC player on it and guess what it played perfectly this time. Perhaps this is old news but last time I checked it did not run so good a few years ago. I think the newest version of VLC finally got it right.

So now what. There are external blu ray players that can be connected to the Mac like a Plextor or a LG. But there is also an internal blu ray drive available.

I do not know yet for sure which one is best and the most silent but there is always an option to rip the enterial blu ray to a big harddisk and play it from there.

For software you can also try the program Macgo next to vlc that gives a better access to the menu's and subtitle options. VLC player only shows the tracks but you have to guess which language they are. Will be fixed in a later release I am sure.

In comparing a real blu ray to a MKV the blu ray looked a lot better. So now finally the Apple fans can play real blu rays without all the problems that normally come with htpc solutions.

The program SwitchresX lets you make any resolution like 1920x812p@72 or whatever with whatever timings too.

In my opinion the picture is just very good on a Mac. Way better than my ps3 and now it is also very easy. I did not try the hd audio through hdmi as I still have no hd audio processor. I am listening to the dts soundtrack optical out that always sounds perfect. Might try a hd audio processor once.

So there we go buying Baraka and watching it in real HD. Very Happy And the tv series Fargo on blu ray Wink

For CRT hobbyist this is certainly a solution to try.

One short addition. I use this free software to make a profile with uncorrected gamma.

That way you don't get colour banding. But you can try making a little bumb in the gamma.
