I picked up a freebee 8500 today, pulled the lenses off and noticed these 1/4 inch spacer hot melt glued to the back of the lenses. Are they there for a reason?

Score! Never seen those spacers before, but my guess it's so the projector could project a larger screen that normal. (I think that's how it works, lenses further away from the tubes gives a larger image)

silly rabbit, size is determined by distance of tubes from screen.
If they were projecting larger than 300 inches diagonally then reason for the spacers is to probably focus at that size
