Steve was kind enough to create a custom pattern per Kurt and I that helps evaluating a video chain's dynamic range. More specifically the ability to evaluate a display devices linearity and resolving power across the grayscale. This is version one of the pattern and there may be subsequent versions in the future.

So extend a big thanks to Ecrabb for his work and hopefully this can be used for all of those fun projector debates Thumbs Up

Great I was searching for that pattern. Thanks!

I'd like to see 1-to-1 test patterns in 2,560 x 1,440 resolution at a 16:9 aspect ratio as well. There are many others and just an example. Why not 2560x720 perhaps.. I'm thinking out of the box really, and not to be confused with me knowing anything.. just curios.

In windows you kan use the nokia or nec test program that scales to every resolution your desktop is.

Cool. I have been looking at some 1440p videos and TimeScapes a bit and wonder how it would look like on a CRT.

Is it possible to upload this pattern in losless format (eg. .gif or .bmp)?

The original file was a png. Forum won't allow bmp but I'll try a GIF later. Can either be opened by a stand alone BD player?

PNG is also fine.

Me, not yet. I am curious how well my XG holding its 30MHz bandwidth at the different drive levels though... Mr. Green

GIF is very much lossy. It would actually work fine for this particular pattern, and some others, but it's very bit-depth limited (8-bit).

PNG is lossless compression, it's perfect for stuff like this, and the forum handles PNG just fine.

I updated Justin's original post to include the original PNG instead of the lossy JPG.

Still need to make a few more based on some of Kurt's comments, as well as a scope version for Athanasios. Wink

Enjoy!

My BD player won't display PNG files. I know Mike Parker has the same issue. Does anyone else have difficulty with that file extension? I was trying to open using a thumb drive so I'm not sure if this would still be a problem if it were burned to a disc.

My OPPO 103D plays it perfect from a thumb drive.

Special thanks to ecrabb for making this pattern, its to me one of the best test patterns to use while testing different transistors, opamps, filters, decupling and what else is in play when testing and evaluating the magic work of Mike Parker.

This pattern can be used to evaluate bandwidth, and at the same time see how it responds to the output/ drive.

It has revealed problems i never noticed using the good old SMPTE pattern ramping up and down contrast.

To back up this pattern i bought a CROMA pattern generator, who is in Justins hands at the moment.

What BD player are you using, Justin? Let's see what it will display (preferably other than JPG), and we can save it in one of those formats. If we can't find a good image format, and it's a problem for others, we could even take this pattern, along with some others, encode them to video streams, and author an actual Blu-ray ISO, and people can burn their own. That won't be something I'll get done in the next week or two, but if it's something people need and would use, I'd be game. I've always kind of wanted to do it.

Heck, if you guys like it and it's useful, maybe I could even get input, build on it, and turn it into a nice little inexpensive product along the lines of the GetGray DVD. I don't think he's ever updated his to HD, and the Spears and VE discs have so much useless crap on them, not enough good stuff, and it seems like every damn one is more difficult to navigate than the last.

Cheers,
SC

Say what!? Was that a typo?

Ya, the SMPTE pattern is just 10 or so levels of grayscale. GIF should have no trouble with that. Photos not so much, but GIF is great for simple computer graphics.

I often see that PNG pictures also color compressed as well just like GIF...

Most BD players can use BMP.

Just open the PNG in paint or whatever program you want and save it as BMP. Then use the BMP.

Thanks for the pattern!

Hey Steve,

My BD player is a Samsung BD-6900. I'm going to try the bmp version later tonight and will report back.

Yeah a cheap HD disc with "good stuff" on it would be great. This pattern alone is awesome because it helps to evaluate a display in a manner consistent with how we actually view live video.
