Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Rolling Eyes

OK, not really. I'm installing this InFocus IN 5145 projector tomorrow out of town, and I wanted to see it against the stack. I said NOTHING to Barb, and her first comment was:

'Well, now that I've seen your stack...."

(and then she talked about the projector) Mr. Green Mr. Green

Seriously, the first thing she said is 'the colors are way off the mark. She's into graphics design and such, worked at a print shop long ago, etc, so she's even more sensitive to an image than I am.

This beast puts out 5000 lumens, and yeah, even in econo mode, it's wayyyy too bright on my 10' wide screen. We did watch an entire movie on it for shits and giggles, but I couldn't help but notice that ALL of the issues that I hated about the first generation digitals are still there with this generation. Yes, I know it's a presentation projector, not designed for HT use, but still...

-reds are wine colored, there's no vibrant reds
-whites are far from white
-flesh tones SUCK

On the plus side, it is quiet.

That's about the only plus.

Back in the box it goes, I'll post pix of the installation next week. I'm redoing a $140K 'theater' (converted gym) that was installed 7 years ago as an Olympic viewing area for small communities out of town. This is where I'm getting the Crestron touch screen system in on trade from. Will post details of that next week as well.

Hey Curt,

could you still walk under the projectors or are they hitting your head ?

Looking very nice Thumbs Up

I think you are the only one on the world driving a 909 stack ?!

Maybe i'm the one with a 909 blend.

I'll bet that's a 1 chip DLP, using a colorwheel, which would explain all of the color issues you are referring to.

If you do DLP, 3 Chip is the best and only way to go Smile

There's no "but still..." about it, Curt. That's like saying, "I know it's a home theater projector, but still..." then going on to complain because it won't light up a 20-foot screen. It has sh*tty white, colors, and skin tones because it's a light cannon designed and tuned to look decent throwing PowerPoints and training videos on a big screen with ambient light, colors be damned. InFocus isn't exactly known for image quality, either - especially in the presentation line. Man, I haven't even heard anybody mention the InFocus brand for at least three or four years.

I had a 3-chip DLP in the paar and the picture was much much better in comparison to a single chip.

It is indeed an LCD 1080p projector. I frankly was expecting a better image. Other than Cliff's single chip DLP, I haven't watched any digital as close as I did the one last night. It's what the customer wanted.

I was just surprised that LCD reds were still shite after all these years. Barb picked up on it right away.

My stack is amazing, still has the stupid drifting issues, but sound installations and quotes have picked right up, so no time to do anything with the room as you can see. Once I'm back from doing this install, I"ll get my buddy to throw together new framework for the AT screen, and at least that will be up before Christmas.

The stack still has the miniscule drifting issues, seemingly in the same damn spots. It will be a matter of swapping boards one at a time. It's not the SMPS or H boards in either set, so those have been eliminated.

The nice thing is, the overall convergence and geometry per set is super stable. Now with freezing temperatures at night, the room fluctuates a good 10-15 degrees F over the course of 24 hours, as I only heat the room when I'm in it.

No time to work on it right now, sound system quoting is hard and heavy, and the hoarder part of me just bought 50 reel to reel decks and all the parts inventory off Innovative Audio locally, so any spare time right now is put towards that. Still, I want a functional HT by the holidays. Smile

Hey, my new years resolution is to work smarter, not harder. I'm still regularly doing 80 hour weeks, but I've quickly realized over the years that a portion of that is due to my obsessiveness with electronics, and not because of an actual need to work that hard.
