So I currently have a nec PG xtra. I am very happy with the picture. the set seems to have some issues but overall i am happy with it.

I just recently came across an opportunity to purchase an XG LC. the seller doesn't seem to know too much about the set. says he bought it about 10 years ago and never really used it too much. the place he bought it off of said they put new tubes in it so the seller says.

my question is how much better is the picture quality of an xg over a pg.

Well first off, that's what ALL the sellers say! Overall pix is quite a bit better. Brighter, sharper and no halos due to the LC chamber.

The downside is that the tubes are discontinued, so unless the tubes are mint or near mint, I'd pass.

I've got one near mint tube set that I'm selling for $750, fully gone through.

I've made this switch in this march.
Yes, tube condition what matters the most, check personally the tube wear, or ask for tube pics WITHOUT lenses!

The biggest advantage of the XG LC is the LC itself, the difference is quite apparent, once you used to LC you won't look any AC machines again Smile Even though I find the XG a bit less sharp (on test patterns - raw resolution) than the PGX, but because of the better contrast of the LC it will look sharper actually than the PG.

i've read a lot of complains how awfully loud the XG is, I'm not sure is there any real difference between EU and US models, and AC and LC models, but I find my XG LC EU less annoying than the PG Xtra (EU) I had.

if you're planning to stick with CRT technology for 2+ years and don't yet have a spare PG, then go and get the XG for $200 or so. NECs tend to get issues now and then and it just feels comfy to have a spare machine sitting somewhere. Don't expect too much WOW of the improved picture though.

The tubes may well be discontinued, but if you want to take your chances with VDC, they still have all three colours in stock of brand new ( not rebuilt ) P16LJEs.

Gábor, in my experience the XG852 i have is a US RUNCO model, and is SIGNIFICANTLY louder than the Euro spec XG1351 LC.

That is interesting because the US PG xtra had less fans than the EU PG xtra, so one would expect the same tendency with the later models.

Dont think the number of fans has anything to do with it, the 852 has at least one less than a 1351...
