Please could someone direct me to a topic about this as when I do a search I get hundreds or thousands of topics to look through.

A mate of mine has an old rear projection TV and when I look in the back with the cover off I can see one of the main cables arcing at the socket and a small black one arcing. This allow the TV to momentary come on but I suspect that it goes into protection mode and turns off.

Sorry I forgot to take photo's but if they are vital then I'll go back to his place and take some.

The cause of arcing on leads is bad leads. I carry them for CRT projectors, they should fit the tubes in his set as well.

See if the leads are covered with black soot. clean them well, the carbon in the soot acts as a conductor and might carry Static charge or the HV.

Or it could be what Curt says.

Thanks guys for your input.

@Nashou66 the inside of his TV is full of that black soot. I just tried to move the small black wire in the hope that in wouldn't arc and my hands were completely black.

@Curt if I don't come right with the soot removal then I'll talk to you about new leads. How do the leads fit into the tubes and on his TV some sort of black box? Do they just push in or are they soldered?

This time I'll do my best to remember to take photo's when I go there

Sorry guys I forgot to ask. How do I remove the soot? What I thought of doing was moving the display close to a door and then blowing in there with air from my compressor. After that I thought of using a damp rag and wiping, rinsing the rag, squeezing till damp and so on. By doing this will I cause myself any headaches?

As requested Curt here are they photo's of the HV splitter. In the last photo you can just make out the small black lead arcing aswell. I asked previously how to remove the carbon dust with no reply, so could some please tell me how to do this the right way sothat I don't do any damage.

Regards
Alan

that's not the lead arcing, that's either dirt, or the splitter may have a hairline crack in it.

Pull out all HV leads, wipe everything down including the leads with isopropyl alcohol and paper towel. Wipe everything clean. let the alcohol evaporate. Reassemble. test.

If it still arcs from the same spot, exchange HV leads with another one in the splitter. If it still arcs at the same spot, the splitter is bad.

How do the leads come out Curt? I did try give them a slight pull but was scared that I would break something. Are the leads fitted in there tightly?

If I see it well there is a second ark spot where the lead goes to the left. Clean that whole cable from that conducting dust.

you guys are missing the obvious. The boot on two leads are pulled back and folded over . They need to be put all the way over the socket for the HV lead.

NAsh, any HV splitter that I've had here should work fine without the rubber boot in place. I stand by my words.Smile

Alan, usually you need to push down on the lead, twist it, and then the wire should release.
