You can get reasonably correct color using HD Essentials test patterns and the filter that comes with the disc but make sure you only tweak the user accessible controls - don't use any internal adjustments such as R,G or B video gain otherwise you will get into serious trouble. If you have good vision and PERFECT color vision you can get an approximate greyscale by carefully tweaking the grid voltage on each tube but again, you could get into trouble if you don't have a sound technical understanding of what you are altering. You could damage a tube by doing this.
Bottom line is - you really should get a meter or get a professional to calibrate your projector. There are some reasonably priced meters around that maybe aren't perfect but will still give you an acceptable picture.

You could build a DIY optical comparator with a high-CRI (Color Rendering Index) D65 flourescent tube. The big problem is dimming them, so some neutral-density filter material would likely be needed as well.
The previous poster is absolutely correct. Do not adjust any chassis pots without a scope. Everything you need is in the setup menu, unless the CRTs are too far gone to be balanced.

Rejected. On Ebay they auction spyders for less than 20 EUR all the time. In fact, I bought Ebay item 311080229744 last week just for the fun of comparing it to my DIY HCFR probe. The Spyder arrived this Monday.
Check this search routine | Quote: | | (datacolor, "x-rite", "gretag-Macbeth", "pantone", colormunki, "spyder 2", "sequel imaging", colorvision, colorimeter) | but wait a bit because I am still looking to shoot some more models for comparison.

thats a good one! and they realy go away for less than 50 bucks.. hmm )
@fastscot, sounds good, but i would need to buy the HD essential dvd AND some mentioned Filter though.. is there no way to do anything reasonable without any additional stuff than a good test pattern?
@fifawei WTF?)

That's good news. Is there an app for android too? I don't use a smartphone yet but my kids do, Samsung only.
