|

Hi all,
After a week or so of experimenting with my 75 Euro BG808 I'm quite impressed with the results I got so far, although my setup is still rather experimental. I use a Sony DSC1024 scaler in 64k mode to view video or computer signals.
I did 3 or 4 complete setups, each time going a little further. But there is one thing at the very beginning that puzzles me somewhat... Actually, the procedure calls for centering the rasters, followed by aligning the optics. Both are very important for later steps.
So far so good, but I feel like having a chicken and egg problem. Aligning the raster by looking into the tubes does not allow a precise centering of the raster, and once the optics aligned (at least for E-W alignment) I cannot align the raster anymore. But how can I tell if the raster has been properly centered?
In my case, I managed to get a quite decent image but noticed that the optics are not symmetrical. The red lens is noticeably more tilted to the middle. I guess that should not be the case. I could align the red tube so its symmetrical to the blue one, and then play with the raster controls. But its always a try and error, there seems to be no fine control when aligning the raster, at least not in the installation menu. Perhaps I have to take a test image and do it on that?
So my question is, how do I determine if the raster really is in the middle? Or, perhaps, did I misinterpret something?
cheers
Martin

Connect source that you use.
Set convergence to midposition.
Set contrast to low value
With sunglasses look into the lenses
Set brightness to high value until reveal the raster around the image (the raster IS NOT the image).
If the rasters (of the red and blue) is not in the middle of tube surface you must to shift with trimmers in vertical board and focus board.
The green is the reference and there aren't any trimmers

I did all that (+ set all geometry values to midposition), actually with the installation menu, not the source that I use. Should not make any difference.
Still it seems adjusting to the middle cannot be done with high enough precision, and once I finished this step and also finished the optical alignment I find myself:
1. with a crosshair that does not coincidide vertically
2. with blue and red tubes that do not have the same angle (horizontally)
For 1. I can go back to raster alginment and try to move red and blue raster somewhat. The rest has to be done in during convergence alignment.
For 2. I do not know... I might try to set both optics to the same angle, and then move the raster until it coincides. But that seems the wrong way round. Also, there are 2 methods for moving the raster, with the joystick via menu, or directly within the electronics. I might move everything to 50 electronically, then... well... move the green raster electronically to where it belongs (cannot be done by pots, I understand) and then move the red and blue rasters with pots.
I feel theres something I'm missing... BUT ITS AN AWFUL LOT OF FUN
cheers

You must to check if the rasters are centered in tube's surfaces.
My suggest is connect the source that will use and operate with genlocked pattern or source pattern.
However ...
SET THE CONVERGENCE IN MIDPOSITION
Look through the lense with sunglasses and center the raster of the green with remote control.
Look through the lenses and center the rasters horizontally of red and blue with pots in the focus + shift board.
Look the screen and move the lenses until VERTICAL lines of the center zone of the crosshatch will be convergent.
Then look the screen and shift vertically the rasters (red and blue) with pots in the vertical board until horizontal lines of the center zone of the crosshatch will be convergent.
In the vertical board there are two pots for set vertical width (again ... only red and blue). Turn these pots until all horizontal lines will be convergent as best as possible.
Don't worry if the all lines of the sides and corners will be not perfectly convergent, it's normal.

OK, I think I get the "picture".
So green raster can only be adjusted electronically (in the installation menu), but blue and red will be adjusted by pots. Actually that means that I do not at all use the electronic adjustment (of the installation menu) for red and blue...
I'll try that once the BG and the screen positions are fixed.
cheers
