|
|
Hey guys. I was directed to this forum from AVS. I'll just copy what I posted here:
Hi guys, just joined.
I had a few questions regarding CRT projectors. Currently I have an old LCD XGA projector for a "cinema" if you can even call it that.
I don't have much money, so I won't be getting any super high end 1080P projectors, but I have been thinking of going CRT? I've been reading a lot of threads on this site actually, about all the different makes and models, how they work, multiscan/quad etc. It's nothing like what I'm used to dealing with...
But I can't find any. I'm in Australia (Specifically Sydney), and I've seen a couple on eBay but after researching the particular model, I've found that it's probably not worth spending the money because it doesn't have a fast enough refresh rate / can't really be pushed higher than 480i I believe? I've been thinking of trying to get something like a Sony VPH-1270 or maybe VPH-1031QM?
I'm still learning about them, and hope to get one eventually. My question is, does anyone know where I could obtain one? Even if it's damaged or fails to start, I have a reasonable understanding in electronics which helps, but I assume spare parts are very scarce!
Oh and I'll throw in a very quick extra question! I know somebody who still uses a CRT TV. It's one of the last CRT TV's Sony manufactured I believe, very modern, flat screen, all that. But the flicker. Oh god the flicker. If I can easily see flicker on a modern CRT, flicker that drives me mad, will this possibly be an issue on a much older CRT projector?
Thanks!!!!

That popped up fast. I sent the guy a message regarding post/storage until I can get it. I doubt I'll get it though. Do you guys know how much this model can sell for? At the moment I could probably push around $400 but yeah. Will it sell for $3,000 or something way out of my budget?

They come up all the time. There is a member on this forum that hoards PGs and XGs, he might sell you one as i know he never uses any of them.
That Sony shouldnt go much past $150, its an 8" ES focus set, pretty ordinary for HD, but itll do you fine for standard def.

Ah OK well that's good to know. Could I push it to 720p? I'm actually on my phone right now so can't really do any research, but I'm assuming it would blow my current XGA LCD out of the water anyways! I do think I should spend the money though. And trying to output 1080p would be great. I want to spend the next few months fixing up the room so I suppose I should try get the right projector the first time.

Itll beat it on contrast ratio, but thatll be it. You can push it to 720p but i doubt itll look as good as 1080i. If youre watching DVDs there is no good reason to go beyond their own resolution.

Yeah it's all centerlink cash!
I kid. I don't get any free money. I loose all my money from feeding just myself. But who needs food. Projectors are more important.

Flicker wont be an issue because the phosphor decay rate will be rather abit slower than that direct view Sony that is designed to be watched at 100Hz interlaced or 50Hz progresive.

I plan on blue ray. But my current XGA has a bad fly screen door effect and has bad LCD panels. Oh and it's XGA. 1024x768. Would I be better off trying to save up and get a CRT that can output the equivalent of 1080p?

I hardly ever eat really, but i do own 7 projectors and 2 rear projection CRTs. Aussie_Al has a few projectors that he'll be unlikely to ever use, you may just get a bargain out of him if youre lucky. Depending on tube conditions and what model...
Id suggest you get an NEC myself, they are quite exceptional.

1080i is fine on a decent CRT, youll want a high end 9" to go 1080p.

Ah OK. And I guess those are the Sony/Barco $8000 > units? I think 1080i will keep me happy. Hmm.

And thanks. I'll PM Aussie_Al and see if he can help! Sorry for the slow responses by the way. Typing on this phone is hell.

I agree with case a nec would give you a great bang for the price
If I were you I would check out the ranking list here
http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm
A lot of the sets will do HD in some form(some better then others)
Good luck

I checked out the list of projectors and I think I'll wait until I can find one that's capable of 1080p. I just don't want to spend hundreds now and hundreds later. I'll try and contact that guy you mentioned above this afternoon, but if anyone else here in Australia is trying to sell one...

You can try your luck, he may not sell!! He is coming over tomorrow night. $300 would probably get you a foot in the door with a PG in good shape.
An NEC PG or XG will get you perfectly fine 1080i, ive got one of each here, the XG is in my bedroom, the PG is currently decomissioned. They are both EM focus and very sharp, the convergence system is the best there is. If a good one of either comes up, they are well worth a look and will smoke a 125x/127x ES focus Sony in every way.
Sony D50s come up abit over here, but those are 7" ES focus, great projectors, but no match for an NEC. Ive also seen a few Barcos come up here, but the only ones worth a look are the 909/Cine 9/CineMAX or the 1209. 808s are good enough, but again no match for an NEC.
Rare to see a G90 come up, youll be looking at about 3 grand for one of those, and probably the same for a 9" Barco. Marquees are not common here either, but the 9500 ULTRA is probably the best 9" to aim for due to the sheer number of parts available for them, if one came up itd be worth a serious look.

Thanks for all your help. So are you and Aussie_Al mates? I can probably manage $400, so $300/$350 Would leave me with enough for postage, that would be fantastic.
But do you mean there is some sort of sale on this website, or will you get in contact when you see him and see if he has anything? I sent Aussie_Al a PM but if you're seeing him, then that's great!
Once again, thanks for the help. I'm going to do some research on these NEC CRT's. To be honest I've never really had any NEC products. We had an NEC TV in the family a while back, it was an old CRT with a single Coax input, and it was flawless, I do think they're an excellent brand. They also manufacture a lot of the Analog TV Broadcasting systems I believe, Dave from eevBlog did a tear down and a walk through of the equipment you can see here
