My main system does nothing but movies. I'm going to demo a Aerial Accustics SW-12 subwoofer in a couple of weeks. This is a wicked expensive high end sub and I want to put it through it's paces. I'm looking for a movie that will bring out the best of it. I don't really do any music in that room unless it's part of a movie soundtrack. Looking for suggestions

Is there a reason you don't use it for music?
"Deep Purple Live at Montreux 2006" has some good bass bits. There's a bass guitar hit on the intro to "Lazy" that's especially impressive.

I don't understand. If you really want to hear a sub shine, music is where to do it. Any dirty amp and ported box will make explosions loud. A really good sub brings out the best in music. MONTROSE has great bass throughout the entire album. I get how important it is to movies too but I see music as the way to show off a sub. I wish I could afford better subs for music.

I'm not sure why or what is the misunderstanding here. I am demoing this sub in a dedicated "movie theater" environment.
Anyway, one of my fav's is the sound track in "Top Gun" I'm just looking for others

Master and Commander with Russel Crowe.. The cannon scenes will TEST your subwoofers. I have two JBL 2245H.. They got a workout with this movie... The JBL 18" fire up into my back row of seats.. The ports vents to my front row..
The next movie was the new Superman.. That was pretty good.

I couldn't disagree more. While it's true that a junk sub will sound like junk with music, so will movies. There lots of very decent subs that will sound fine - even great - with music, but just won't be much to get excited about for movies. Most music - especially rock music - doesn't have much energy below even 30hz, so there are lots of good subs that will sound great. OTOH, there are plenty of movies that have LFE energy to 10hz and below. That's the energy you FEEL and THAT makes for an awesome home theater experience, and most subs - even big subs - don't have much, if any usable output even at 20hz. If you haven't heard good movie LFE in a well-treated room that's flat to well below 15hz, you just don't know what you're missing. Seriously… What separates the men from the boys when it comes to subs is LFE in movies.
Here's a few of the best:
Art of Flight
Tron Legacy
Batman Dark Knight
Master and Commander
Book of Eli
Iron Man
Cloverfield
Inception
War of the Worlds
U571
Pearl Harbor
Blue Man Group: How to Be a Megastar
Chip, I haven't read much about the Aerial SW12, but at first glance it looks pretty overpriced for what it is. A single 12.5" ported alignment with a 400w amp was great in 1995, but leaves much to be desired these days.
For similar money, if you have the room, you could buy a SERIOUS world-class sub setup from Mark Seaton. A SubMersive F2+ with an F2 Slave… FOUR 15-inch drivers in two cabinets for smooth in-room response, all driven by 4000w of class-D, DSP amplification. You need some space, so it's not for a typical living room, but you could probably get flat to around 10hz in most (even large) rooms.
For a more sane setup in a living room type situation, a single SubMersive HP+ in a nice veneer, shipped, would be less money than the Aerial, and even that would be no doubt superior to the Aerial.
If you wanted to leave even more money in the bank, you could get a couple of SVS subs like Nashou did and still have a superior setup. A single ported 12-inch with a 400w amp just isn't anything to write home about anymore. Fine for music, but meh for movies.

I agree with ecrabb
Why it's because I am a audiophile and let to hear every detail in both my music and movie soundtracks
I have watched I think at least two of the movies in his list and man do they really get my jbl sub to belting out the really low end(bass that you can feel)
I do have my home audio system using the same sub but the super low end just isn't reached
I know one of the pirates of the caribbean movies has good low end thump(cannons and other sound effects)
I will use the dts soundtrack if the disc has it(blu ray or DVD)
With infinity speakers you hear everything from the gut shaking lows (need to find the specs for my sub) to 30-40khz in the high end of the audio range(love the emit tweeters)

Ecrabb last time my cousins watched iron man on my big screen they couldn't believe how much low end it had
FYI my jbl sub is a 10 inch 600watt beast(trying to find the full specs on it as I have no manual)
The only song that I know of that might reach as low as some movies is the bass I love you song(trust me it is a real song)
FYI if you do play that song do it AT A LOW VOLUME or you WILL damage your subs(I used it to kill a speaker that was junk just for fun and to prove the point)

I know I just don't get it. I like to hear bass. Sweet smooth bass. If I want to feel it I will just use buttkickers. There is no difference in the "feel" to me. IMHO. I quit installing and competing in car audio when everything went to SPL and instead of cash prizes they handed out dash plaques.

I think Crabb was just trying to inform you that it doesn't take great monster subs for music, because there isn't a lot on the low end.
I would be curious to know how much the Aerial is. One of the best subs I have heard was a DIY sonotube. IIRC the owner used an 18" or 15" high end driver, but still spent less than $500 on the total build.

There is still some of us who doesn't compete with the spl crowd
I have one 12inch sub in my car powered by a 700+ amp still can feel the bass on certain songs but its smooth for its size and blends we with the infinity reference component speakers I have in my car(my truck is the same way just a smaller sub)
I have thought of using the butt kickers but without a great bass line to back them up its not worth it if you ask me(plan on getting some soon and a separate amp to run them
Any sub can do smooth bass if its done right but only certain ones let you feel and hear the bass line at the same time(one reason I haven't got the butt kickers so far)

I concur with Steve's list. Cloverfield and War of the Worlds in particular. Good grief there is some demanding infrasonic content on those soundtracks, and yes, movie soundtracks are of course WAY more demanding on subwoofers than (typical) two channel audio recordings.

As a comical side story: I had an old sub that I thought I needed until I purchased a miniDSP mic and measured it. Turns out the stupid sub rolled off like a rock at 35Hz where as my L+R mains were flat down to 10Hz. I turned off the sub and reconfigured my AV receiver for no subwoofer. Best mod I ever did to my HT's audio....

Damn, what speakers do/did you own that are flat down to 10Hz? I don't even know if a pair of Dunlavy SC-VI's could do this, and those things are monsters.
