TV/Projector: 9500LC Ultra

Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:51 pm    Post subject: "New" 9500 Ultra cycling

I acquired a Vidikron One Ultra. I ran it for a bit on the floor, checked the screen distance, then mounted it to the ceiling and swapped the horizontal and vertical signals to reverse the rasters. I then started centering and working on geometry, etc. It was on for maybe 20 minutes at a time and didn't notice anything odd.

After running on the ceiling for a bit, suddenly, after about an hour, the screen kind of blinked... I don't remember my old 9500lc doing that, so I started watching closer.

About 10 minutes later the image disappeared and I heard a light HV crackle and it came back, fuzzy at first then came back in focus. Not cool. I never heard a snap or anything. I looked at the back, green light on the CLM.

A couple minutes and the same thing, and it got faster until it would just get back and immediately disappear again...

I shut it off, unplugged it, and re-seated CLM, HDM, and Focus boards. Turned it back on and about 10 minutes later the cycling started again.

I shut it off and got on here to do a search... My vertical is set to zero for 16x9. Could that be it? Where do I go from here? HDM? HV?

*sigh

Hello

Pull the anode splitter away from the green tube, let it hang mid-air then unplug one tube at a time, see if you can isolate the problem to a particular tube. Do not grab the splitter while running, 35000 volts can jump three inches

Ok, did that. Unplugging each one at a time makes no difference.

It's cycling so fast now that it does not completely return to focus.

The heighth set to 0 in the geometry settings is nothing special.
My settings on my 8500 Ultra are very low too, that shouldn't cause any problems,
especially not HV-problems.
I would remove the upper cover and check the HV cables.
If they are all ok and in the wire- clips, they maybe to close to some metal parts of the chassis.
if not, make shure they can't touch the cover you removed.
that should be the problem here: on the floor it all works well, but if the proj. is mounted upside down,
they touch the upper cover.

Best regards, Julian

Hello

No snapping sound, likely the arc is in the rubber brick part of your high voltage section. PM me if you need one to try

Thanks Tim and Julian!

HV cables are all new from the Tubes (new Tubes). The HV line from the PS is double insulated. The cover is fiberglass and it is off. I heard no characteristic snap of HV arcing at any time.

I just swapped out the HDM with an 07 from my 9500LC and ran for 15 minutes, no apparent problem, aside from the projector not listening to the remote half the fime... weird!

I re-seated the daughter card on the original HDM and re - installed it. Then played with it for a bit. No more failures.

Really??? Could that be it????

Hi Tim,

I was watching for that and never saw it happen. Green all the way.

If it cycles again, I'll check.

Could it have been the HDM daughter board?

since your PJ has been sitting in storage for a long time id clean all contacts for all removable chips, boards, daughter boards, HV connections etc with DeOxit cleaner and the protector.

Guys, the set came from me, and was cleaned (Caig contact cleaner on everything), and tested for 48 hours and retubed. it sounds either like the 0 V height could be an issue, can you bump it up to 20 to see if the issue goes away?
If not, try swapping the HVPS, as it may be intermittent. and if so, I'll send another one when I get back.

I'm suspecting the HVPS, as the problem is getting worse. Sounds like internal arcing within the HVPS as Tim says.

(responding here as my email is dead slow here for some reason).

I think its the hvps as I run the vertical size on mine with no issues from it

Mine is picky about certain other things kicking at times and will black out because of it

Though that doesn't sound like what is the case here it is likely the hvps failing(been there before)

Ps curt CHECK your emails man I have been trying to get back to you on the parts for my dwin

I spoke too soon.

Every so often it blinks at random. The longer it stays off (no image) the worse it looks when it comes back. Sometimes it's a single blink,:and sometimes it's a bunch in a row, with the last being the longest blink, and then it re-focuses.

It does look like arcing... but I hear nothing when it happens. I'll swap the HVPS tomorrow.

I swapped out the HVPS. Definitely the problem!

I was wondering why the image was so dark and the focus was not easy to manage! Different HVPS from the other 9500LC and everything is bright, no more blinks, and the focus is rock solid!

This older HVPS definitely has a different HV connection... No black double insulator, but just the normal clear tube sheath.

With the old supply, I noticed that when I turned the contrast up to around 50, the picture blinked more too. That's all gone...

Does the bad HVPS say 34.9Kv or 34.Kv on it.

Definitely a 34.9, later issue HVPS. Definitely bad.

Like having a new projector...

Hi everybody,

i think I'm also a new client for a replacement HVPS. My 9500LC also blinks now and then (once every two films) and I find it taking very long before I have good focus (~45 min.) and I think my focus is not as good as it was 2 years ago. Melifluonze If I understood well you noticed a brighter and sharper image?

Regards,

Ron.

Twice as bright. And the Grayscale made far more sense!
