|
|
I have a 10-year old RCA Senium 60" Rear Screen (bought on the spur of the moment while I was working for Thomson, now Technicolor) with a single DVI input (no HDMI or even VGA) with (I assume) 9" or 10" CRTs. It just won't die, but obviously the picture is soft from gassy tubes and only 720p rez. I've been using a Moome 4-input HDMI converter to take advantage of HD from HDCP compliant source machines (Blu-ray, DirecTV, etc...), but I am long overdue to upgrade to full HD and 3D or even 4K on the TV/monitor itself.
Anybody done a conversion of a Rear Screen to take advantage of full HD, HDCP, 3D, or even 4K, etc...? Is this so far fetched and difficult/costly to be a full-on nightmare? Comments/suggestions?

Hello
More like impossible, and likely the tubes for that are no longer available.

If your tubes are soft, then there's no point in continuing.
You do realize also though that there's really not a big difference between 1080i and 1080p, right? Stop believing the consumer hype that you 'NEED' 4K or 1080p. I'd find the internal focus pots on the RP set, check the glycol for discoloration and fungus (if you know your way around the inside of an RP set), and I'll bet you can make 1080i or 720p look better than what you have now.

It wont be hard if its 8", just re-use the original LC housings and transplant a good EM focusing set.

But still not sure if there is any room for the long neck of the EM tubes.

Yeah i know, but some sets have good space under the tubes, spacing them up abit higher wont hurt too much cause the lens should have the range and the tube face usage on rear pros is usually quite small.

When my RPTV bites it ( Also an RCA Senium BTW ) I'd like to do a EM focus split pack in there. I know in most RPTV's you can move the projector up in the case to reduce overscan so having the EM set in there my not be an issue.
An interesting experiment for sure.
Would you be able to reuse the stock lenses or have to look for a set out of a Retro set?

I plan on doing this with my samsung rptv the day the tubes go fully
I would adjust the focus pots first do one tube at a time and leave the blue slightly defocused
If after you tweak the focus and its still blury then open it up and check the tubes for old glycol(my Sammy needs this in two of its tubes)
Also the optics in rear pro tvs get really dirty(extremely dirty if you smoke) over the course of time
I had a lxi(sears tv made by Phillips) that my cousin gave me.
When he gave me the set he said it was blury so first thing I done was open it up and the inside was haired over in dust
By the time I got through cleaning and tweaking the set looked like a new one(super sharp and clear)
I did bump up the g2 knobs slightly to fix the hotspoting due to the 7inch tubes
After I got through I didn't feel like upgrading till the day the audio board died(wish I had kept it though despite the issue)
Hence why I am keeping my Sammy till the day it dies fully
