I'll tend to my Super Bowel movements prior to the game, thank you very much! Razz

Just walked a guy through resetting his Moome card that somehow glitched, and yes, I'll be watching. Not intently, not all the time, but I'm there in spirit..

We have a huge SB party every year and usually get between 50-75 people over. The theater room with the G90 is reconfigured and we can pack about 30 people at a time in there. Than the SB is also on in the living room and kitchen on flat panels. Usually only about half the people who come actually come for the SB so the theater works out to be just about the right size Smile

What really sucks is that the SB is on FOX and they have the worst image quality of all the networks by far. On the big screen you can really see the poor image quality with fox. Even non-videophiles have commented.

grrrr FOX sux.

Can't you make lemonade out of a lemon? Mr. Green

LOL, yeah Fox pic quality leaves a lot to be desired. Plus, I dislike Joe Buck. I would rather have ESPN, NBC or CBS any day of the week. The only good thing for me is that I get my best reception with Fox. If this was on CBS, then I might have drops.

Hopefully there won't be too many ED ads, as we're watching it with the kids. Rolling Eyes I guess we can start watching it half an hour late and skip through the crap, then take breaks to make sure we have a little video queued up to fast forward through.

Also bummed it's on Fox. I'll have to hook up the OTA antenna so it's at least that good.

Edited the post title - thinking of "super bowel" was grossing me out every time I saw it. Wink

Steve,
Are you saying the Direc reception is worse on Fox than the other networks?

No. What I'm saying is that ALL the networks look worse on DirecTV than they do OTA. D* looks fine on a typical 42-inch living room TV, but blow it up on a 110-inch screen, and it looks like ass.

It isn't just the compression, either. Last I knew, DirecTV encoded to 1440x1080i instead of 1920x1080i, so 25% of the horizontal resolution was just gone before they encoded. So, 1080i sources like NBC, CBS, and ABC, all look superior OTA in most markets to DirecTV. I don't know what they do with a 720p source from the network.

I don't how much better Dish Network is; maybe a little. My sense of it is they're all varying degrees of crap, but I do know that on a big screen, DirecTV looks like ass.

Let's put it this way… On my system at least, here's how I'd organize my sources by picture quality:
Blu-ray - 12
Vudu - 9
Apple TV rentals - 8
Netflix streams - 6
OTA - 4
DirecTV - 2
DVD - 1

That's just a ballpark, seat-of-the-pants scale, but OTA is noticeably better than DirecTV on a big screen.

It's pretty pathetic when an internet streaming service smokes the picture quality of satellite.

Oh, here's another example… My buddy and I watched the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona last weekend on Fox Sports 1, and I couldn't stand how fuzzy it was on my big screen, so I used the lens control on the JVC and zoomed the lens in to make the picture about 65 percent of the size. Probably roughly a 75-inch diag screen I'm guessing. It was much more tolerable that way.

I just have too large of a viewing angle (large screen/short viewing distance) for a sub-par source.

Wow, you think OTA is worse than streaming? I thought OTA bit rates were supposed to be pretty high.

I totally agree and never record or watch locals off the D* sats. I actually have the AM21 over the air receiver that connects to the HR34/44. It's wasn't expensive at all and that way you get local OTA with an antenna that records and works through the D* receiver.

The worst thing though is that there is some strange bug in the AM21 that cause FOX (and only FOX) to freeze up from time to time. If I'm recording it that the recording stops there... I'm not sure what happens when it does that live as I've never seen it in real time. So I have to set my DVR to record both the over the air and sat rebroadcast when I record FOX. Tonight I've got the SB set to record on both, but we'll watch on OTA. The second recording is just the back up.

I usually start football games one hour late and then blip through the commercials and half time. That winds up having the game actually end at just about real time. But with people over and all the hype about the SB commercials and half time I can't fast forward. I would have a massive crowd uproar Wink

OTA is stuck with MPEG2 so the compression isn't as good as modern formats that are available on BD and streaming.

Well, because I've only said I'd do it for the last 5 years, I defungused my R and G tubes, and added color filters to my retro BG808s!
