(Probably stupid) Projector Alignment Question

I've been thinking about this for a while, and can't come up with a reason why this wouldn't work, so I'm hoping someone can tell me if it's a stupid idea.

I've got the line of coincidence issue on my 1209s. I know that I am off square a bit, and lack a good laser level and such to make precise measurements. However, if I set all geometry and convergence settings to midpoint, adjust a crosshair pattern so that it is centered on the green tube face and not skewed, is there any reason why I can't just aim the projector manually so that the image fits the screen? Then I'd just need to aim it, watching the screen, so that the crosshair is centered, and a full image fills the screen without the need for any top or bottom keystone adjustments.

Is there any reason why this would result in a non-square setup? For example, would it be possible that the midpoint top and bottom keystone settings do not result in a square image?

This just seems a lot easier (and cheaper) than going out to buy a laser level, and spend an hour measuring every single distance to make sure the projector is perfectly square. My projector is on my basement floor, so it's not like I'm permanently hanging it by this method.

Thanks!

Projectors are way more forgiving than what people think. Case in point: Cliff's stack. both G90s are wayyy off the center mark, and show a great pix. Want to get rid of the line? Reduce top and bottom bow and keystone towards 50%, and see when it goes away. Usually you can get decent (but not perfect) top/bottom bow or keystone to get rid of that annoying line. You can then decide if you want to raise/lower the projector (if possible) to get both perfect geometry and no line.

It does go away when the top and bottom keystones are centered. I think I'll just center them both, adjust the aim of the projector to fill the screen with those keystone settings, and re-do geometry and convergence from that position.

Left and right keystoning don't seem to cause the line, at least at their current settings, so I hope I won't have to raise or lower the projector at this point.

Thanks!

It's just a V key/pin issue, not anything to do with the horizontal adjustments.
