Has anyone seen this series on DVD. I saw it on TV and loved it. I was waiting for a Blu-Ray release but from what I am reading that doesn't seem likely so I did some homework on the DVD release and apparently the quality is questionable or is it
There are some really comprehensive box sets about so should I buy as I have avoided anything DVD but there is no choice with this or will I be dissappointed and should just avoid it.

I have only looked at the Dvd box set as it is really comprehensive. It has every series and every movie and the spin off Crusade.

Thanks for the link I will take a look.
The entire box set is AU$113-AU$139 depending on the vendor.

I watched the whole box set several years ago. The quality is really uneven. Some shots will be crystal clear, and others will be totally fuzzy and out-of-focus. Maybe it wouldn't have been noticeable on a small screen -- I don't remember seeing it when I watched the series originally -- but it's terrible on a big screen. I can't believe Straczynski would have allowed such crap quality.

It was originally 4:3 format for tv but then for some reason when they went to DVD they remastered it and changed to 16:9 format. Apparently any scene with CGI was badly effected by the format change. Why they didn't just leave it 4:3 escapes me paticularly when you consider the quality issues as you have raised.
So you wouldn't bother.

Actually no, as I remember the CGI shots were all beautiful. It was certain live-action sets that looked like they used the wrong lens. If I remember right, the "garden" area (where e.g. Sheridan and Delenn would meet for discussions) was almost always out of focus.
I wouldn't bother if you only want top-quality video, because it ain't. But if you love the show, it's cool to have the set. B5 is basically the last TV show I watched faithfully (I'm not a big TV watcher ) so I enjoyed seeing the story again even if the video quality sucked at times.

In that case, perhaps the lens was out of focus on purpose. I.e., maybe the set sucked really badly, and they defocused the lens to cover that up? If that's the case, then it's highly unlikely to ever see a blu-ray release.
I only watched it occasionally when it originally aired, and unfortunately have no memory of the PQ at all.

Do you happen to know if it was remastered wider (i.e., from film elements)? Or just cropped back, like other shows have suffered?

Because clueless buyers will then whine about the black bars on the sides. Most have no idea about OAR, and simply want their screen "full". (and are even willing to hit the "stretch" button to achieve it.)

From what I have read it was re mastered wider.
