There's a Sony G90 near me that has 2500 hours on it at a cheap price. Tubes are good. Got me thinking of possibly updating

I read threads saying a chip or some type of updates are done on this pj.??

If so, are they needed to make it run better etc? Would you buy one without the updates?

There are two things that are problematic with the G90, some machines using a bad batch of ic on YA board, and it isn't repairable and if it is still working on a bad ic it will go wrong sooner or later, fortunately you can tell if it is good or bad batch from the s/n of the ic421. The other problem is the Dallas NVRAM which holds the presets etc. when the projector is off, there is a battery inside this ic that depletes after time and makes the pj unfunctional, in worst case if the dallas ic give during operation it will spotburn your tube. Replacing the dallas chip is cheap.

Do you know what serial numbers are bad on the IC421?

Can a new YA board be purchased still if need be? Are they expensive?

Replacing the dallas chip- can a nob like me do that? Smile

No, all Sony parts are discontinued, they ran out of the YA board in about 2007. the chip can last for years, or die overnight. Fortunately there are enough G90s being parted out that I've usually got one in stock.. at $1000 for the board.

There's a super long thread here somewhere. I started it, it went for a pile of pages, called something like' Sony owners, check this out'.

it covers the whole Ya board saga in detail, including what chip production run is affected. The theory used to be that the chip died at 1000-1500 hours, but both Craig Rounds and I have had sets in with 5000 hours + where that chip failed way later than the 1500 hour mark. Others I'm sure are still running fine.

Dallas chip is easy to change. I just ordered 10 today, as I ran out.

I looked at the G90 you're looking at, and methinks that the green tube has a bit more wear than his pix show..

I saw that G90 in Minneapolis. When I found it, I told my wife.

"Hey, look… Here's the projector that I lusted after for years. It's for sale, both at a price I'd be willing to pay for it, and at a distance I'd be more than happy to drive to go get it." She said, "Oh, wow... Really? Are you going to go get it and sell your small projector?" I said, "Nope. Just not interested."

My how times change. Even if there was a minty G90 for sale for $100 or hell, for free… I wouldn't go get it for any other reason to flip it. With gas prices and shipping, even that's getting to be an iffy proposition.

Amazing what a difference 2 or 3 years makes.

I'd get the G90, and keep what I got.

No real scare tactics here, just telling the truth. It's well known that the YA board is the Achilles heel of the G90, and tubes are expensive. From the looks of the green tube, and the bad angle that the seller has the tube at, it looks like there may be more wear than it originally looks like. It could also be shadows, who knows.

I wasn't scared off. I really appreciate the facts when asking advice. Saves one from possible major problems.

The set could be fine, I don't know. I'm not able to repair these sets like you guys are, so I decided not to gamble.

Just ask the seller if he could check the number on the chip for you. If it is a good number then the YA shouldn't be a problem.

I have a little more than that in each of my G90s, but I am moving closer and closer to your position. I am really not wanting to f#$k up my living room ceiling.

I told my best friend to go check out the new JVCs at CES and give me his thoughts. When the new DI model hits $2k used or refurb, then I probably won't be able to resist.
