My old Marantz have started with the blinking red standby light and refuses to power on. Twisting the function selector stops the blinking for a few seconds as if something is trying to power up but it fails with no relays clicking and nothing on the display, and it soon resorts back to blinking.

I'm a electronics engineer for a living, I have the service manual and access to a DMM and a scope, I just need some pointers where to start looking. F701 is intact, and the voltages out on CN70 seems okay.

I haven't personally looked into that model, but I would suspect something in the power amplifier or power supply section of the receiver. My best guess would be a part that has failed from age or just getting too weak to work like it should. Most of the time when a receiver goes into protection it is an amplifier problem, but not always.

I would check the power supply, then the amp, if everything seems good from there then check the protection circuit. Since you have the service manual and you're an electronics engineer, it should be a rather easy fix.
