I have the chance to go pick up a Toshiba 50HDX82, its a little out of my service area but I guess Ill still go pick it up to help the people out.

Does anyone remember this set, and if so is it a set worth fixing? I know I am a glutton for punishment, with the HIT V500a I have currently waiting on a light engine replacement. The thing is I have read that the 50" Toshiba "HDX82" models had some (possibly unresolved) issues with the display quality.

Its described as broken/non working cond. anyways, so it may have a gun thats faulty, or various pcb issues. If not, I guarantee Ill have to pull and recap the hyper module as a given. What I am concerned about is this "flicker" issue that got some people worked up back when the sets were brand new. I wonder if all the sets displayed this, or just ones with an underlieing board issue that can be worked out with dilligence?

Just looking for opinions from people with past experience with this set.
If its not that great a set when working at 100% in spec. condition, Ill just pull it apart and take it to the recyclers. I may even turn it down, depending on the advice I get here since its a little ways off for me.

I decided to turn it down, I didnt know it but my aunt had one of these sets in her basement den, so I went and checked it out. All I can say is its color was way off, and its awfully small for my tastes. The main thing I noted the screen flicker, it reminded me of a pc monitor set to a resolution that is borderline too high. So it is apparently a common issue, but she says she doesn't notice it (?!).
The only thing I saw that was an advantage, was its ability to do 1080i. I really get no advantage from HD at all, charter in my area has blocked all digital progamming (hd or not) that was previously available on the expanded basic package, and are even in negotiations to scramble the local broadcast hd feeds as well. Digital is costly, and they know that most people cannot recieve anything ota around here because its too weak. Those local channels are mostly unwatchable on charter anyways, they break up digitally and freeze whenever the screen gets too active. I have a dvd player and thats all, and it only has basic component outputs.

I called charter back when my cable started losing digital channels and I was told it was due to new tvs coming out with "descramblers" built in so they are forced to install high pass filters to any house not subscribed to their newly added "digital tier".... I assume that charter claims that atsc tuners are in violation of their policy, so now if you want digital here, you got to rent their own atsc descrambler. It kind of defeats the entire purpose or advantage of having a built in atsc tuner in a set.

Oh well, I did get another look at the pioneer elite PRO-200 that ill get once she gets a new flat-panel set. For a 60", i remembered it being taller than it is. I also noticed the condition its in. It still looks brand new, the glare protector that sits about an inch from the lenticular is still on it, and theres even a small cardboard box still attached to the back of it for something. Its basically untouched exterior-wise, but I fear qvc is burned into the screen. Ill still take it when the time comes, but the tubes being burned is a real bummer. Oh well free is free, who am I to complain?
