I took a shot in the dark and recently bought a Faroudja NR Series knowing little about it. I was under the impression that I could change the output resolution to anything I wanted. After doing more research I found out these resolutions were set at the factory for their customers specific needs.

So my questions are:

Is there some way to change these resolutions?
Mine seems to be set for 1360x1024 D-ILA, what exactly is D-ILA?
I can get video out of this but the H-Sync is incorrect making it unusable at the moment, is there any hope of me using this properly on a modern LCD?

My goal was to find something with a good comb filter that I could use to play classic video games (composite) on various plasmas, LCDs, video capture devices, etc.

Hi Nate,

I have that very scaler. D-ILA is JVC reflective digital projectors. For many years that came in a resolution of 1365x1024.

Google JVC DILA G10, G11. 150CL you'll see what they were.

Faroudja had an option to send the NRS back to the factory to have the menus opened up so you could use any resolution. However today you would be better off just getting another scaler.

What did you pay for that NRS if you don't mind my asking? What resolution is your TV?

Hey Nate, welcome!

the NRS scalers were awesome for non HD sources back in the day, but since they aren't HD compatible, they are now literally worthless. I sold my last 400 line quadrupler made by Faroudja for $57 I think, and 10 years ago I was getting $1500, and a fight on eBay as to who was the high bidder. Smile The NRS are worth maybe $25-50 at this point. You may fine that your output scan rate is too high for your LCD projector to sync to, as many older ones will only go to 720p, and then even some 1080p ones will have a very narrow locking range as to what frequencies they sync to.

I'd go look for an older Lumagen, something like a Vision that's about 10 years old. Should be under $100 on ebay at this point since they are not HD compatible either, but you can adjust the scanning output to whatever you want.

Thanks for the response guys.

I paid $50 for it.

It is a shame I can't use it because the video looks so good through it. :\

Since it is pretty much worthless I might take it apart to mess with it.

Do you know of something that would work that has the same type of inputs and outputs? Most of the processors I looked at only took and output RGB, component and composite.

Nothing to see in there really. Grab a cheap JVC DILA off eBay and play with it or use it on a CRT monitor or projector. I do/did. 1365x1024 is 4:3 by the way so good for older video games too. I've run PS2 through mine and a regular 4:3 digital cable box. Improved the digital cable box immensely.

Oh yes, also the 3:2 pull down for film sources is really nice on these too.

Perhaps slightly off-topic: How was the picture quality from the 400 when line quadrupling NTSC? Been looking for one of them or an Extron LQ for some time.

Runco also made a quadrupler. I have one of those too. Regular analog cable to the quadrupler was ok on the Ampro 4000. DVD's looked OK too but not nearly as good as off the HTPC at 1024x768@72Hz.

I contacted the Faroudja service center. It's $150 plus shipping to get it reprogrammed for multiple resolutions. Also depending on revision it may or may not have 1080p.

I thought someone 'leaked' (if that's the right word) some firmware, or at least some advice, on how to make these all-resolution ? Probably on AVS somewhere...
