Hi,

I too think that this would be very cool (and voted accordingly).
The only thing I'm a little worried about is shielding. The Marquee uses quite a lot of it for two purposes: Electromagnetic shielding (sheets and boxes made of aluminum) and radiation shielding (sheets of lead). I wouldn't like an ultra-cool looking Marquee which isn't usable because it has noise in the picture and/or is slowly irradiating the audience.
This could possibly be compensated by implementing a mesh of very thin copper wires into the plasic mold. I've seen something similar before and there exist window glasses with integrated shielding against espionage. Something like this could at least take care of the EM shielding.
Maybe the radiation shielding can be modified too. If it could be applied to the tube's plastic shells directly or even to their inside, that could be sufficient. Of course that should be verified with proper radiation measurement tools...

Personally I love the last thing you just said!! The radiation was always my pickle matrix!! If we could build a cool looking cage around the crt's to somehow "catch the radiation" I know nothing about radiation ATM .. Any input is welcomed as I'm still in dreaming stage atm

Hi,

Just some facts about radiation:
The radiation emitted in CRT projectors consists in X-Rays (hard X-Rays to be more specific with an energy between 10-100KeV). It is generated by the electrons being accellerated through high voltage (in this case 39.4 KV) and hitting the phosphor screen.
Therefore the shielding has to be mounted around the tubeface and it has to be lead due to the energy that has to be absorbed. There's a good wikipedia article about X-Rays that You might want to read for further information...

Hello

I'm hi-jacking the thread because I have an ongoing idea to scale it down to stickers with letters cut out of it and paint over. Don't know the English word for it but in Swedish it's "schablon"..

http://www.schablonhuset.se/?id=352&page=trafaret-vashim-tekstom&lang=se

What I want will cost me a 100 $ for a "MARQUEE" sticker that has the letter cut out of it. That will be done as a logo and only for me. Even though I have access to the program - I don't understand how to make it in the format they like it to be to make it cheaper. "Vectoring" something..

I'd like a sticker with just this logo I found on a bottle to be mine. It can't be done without making into a logo as the letters shifts in size. I was thinking to have this logo to fill the entire width of the top aluminium cover. Maybe some other small logos as well (while doing it) to personalize it.

Now, if anyone out there happens to know how to print these I could send you a few samples of the things I'd like (and a few dollars for your efforts to of course) and just post them to me, that would be great.

Cheers!

In English, it's called a "frisket" or mask. There is special masking vinyl to paint, chemical etch, or even media-blasting.

I can make you a vector file like that in about five minutes. I would recommend making it the entire width of the cover, though. Post the dimensions of the cover panel and we can whip up something cool. Ill do it just for the fun to see how it turns out.

Case, yes - he could use vinyl. In fact, I might recommend that. Kind of depends on color and what the surface looks like.

Yeah mate ive used it before, just not on a projector cover, i gave a good coat then let cure, applied vinyl, painted in 2nd colour for however many coats, leave it a while to cure and then remove the vinyl. Really needs to be cured well both before and after vinyl application or the paint could tear or peel off.

I had a felling someone could do this for me. I found type style that very much resembles the one on the bottle and should make everything much easier to. I'll make some measurements and a few drawings about this an get back to you this in a few days or so. Thanks for doing this! Smile

EDIT: I have made a logo but would take a lot off work to finish. I could ask around to see how much a professional designer would charge me, but think it will be far from a 100 $. Tripple that more likely.. I'm taking it off line from now on and not cludder up the thread any more.

Another idea would be to make replicas out of the wood side panels from the Madrigal.

FWIW, about 5-7 years ago there was someone who looked into doing custom molded cases for the Marquee series. I was going to help them sell them here on our products page. Given that this was the time when these projectors were very popular (8xxx/9xxx) there was a lot of interest, but once the pricing came out (about $500-700 IIRC) interest completely died.

By all means go for it, but my experience has been that you cannot ask people if they're interested to gauge interest to know if something is worth doing. While lots of people may say "yes" (even if pricing is provided), at the end of the day all that matters is if people put their money where their mouth is.

Mike Parker's Barco mods were another fine example: He had other PJ mods for years but Barco owners were bugging him forever to do the same for Barco. Polls were created, dozens and dozens showed interest (knowing full well how much it would cost given that his Marquee mod pricing was well known). Out of the 50-100 that showed interest, 2 ended up buying. Complete waste of time.

Given how interest in CRT has died over the years, I'd be extremely shocked if you sold even one mod'ed case (regardless of price).

Of course, I'd love to see someone prove me wrong. Good luck!

Kal

Regarding the logo that I want to create I found more than enough fonts to make that happened. Very cool looking ones to. So I will definitely pursue this matter later on because I'm all out ink at the moment. On the first run I will just print it out on a overhead plastic sheet, if the ink will stick to it, and carve out the letters with a razor-blade. But if doesn't stick, I'll print it on paper and have that between 2 sheets of plastic and give it another go. Gluing them together will probably make it somewhat easier to. If that doesn't work I'll take you up on that offer, ecrabb, about vectoring the logos. But Youtube have plenty on the subject so will try and learn about it first. If anyone wants to try and make a logo themselves then check out the links provided.

Don't go to all that trouble. It will be a pain, time-consuming, and the end-product won't be very good.

With a vector file, you should be able to get vinyl cut for $10-20 in any old sign shop. They'll probably even show you how to apply it, and may supply a couple of the tools to make it easiest. You could also take your Marquee lid into the shop to have them do it for you for a reasonable fee.

Just tell me which font you like best, and I'll make a file for you. It will seriously take me about 5 minutes.

SC

PS - That #8 (on the left) looks most like the can. Most of the others look pretty dated, i.e. old.

Ok, let's go with a vector file then.. let me think it over and make a decision. They dress whole buses here with vinyl and commercial and could ask around who makes them and get a quote for it. I do like # 8 also. Classy looking. Thanks again.
