The seller has many other auctions for similar commercial/industrial equipment, all with similar photos. He says he'll take cash on pickup, or that a buyer can come in and inspect before buying.
Looks totally legit to me. Not uncommon at all with big ticket items to use wire transfer.

What does he have to lose by using Paypal? From a buyers perspective its a large sum and wire transfers offer no protection or recourse. Cash at pickup is OK because you can at least check the thing actually works but who carries that much cash these days?
I doubt he paid that much for the projector even if it is new and he is using the original new price to justify his asking price which says to me he didn't pay much.

He won't take PP because the PP fees will cost him about $600 at that price.
If I were selling something for that much money I wouldn't accept PP either.

Not only the fees, but the buyer can open up a dispute with PayPal many days later stating that "something wasn't right" and most likely get their money back as PayPal typically always sides with the buyer.
With wire transfer, when the money's sent, it's sent. The buyer has no recourse. It's like handing over cash.
