Hi everyone,

I am new to this great forum.
Since 13 years I own a NEC 9 PG+ PJ.
Thanks to all the advice on the net & Curt's pages I managed to get a nice picture in 1080i and could enjoy hundreds of movie hours with it.

However last weekend while watching a movie the vertical edges of the picture started to wobble a little.
Then suddenly the PJ shut down. (Movie 43, perhaps the PJ was shocked by it too...)

Shocked

Turning it on resulted in the following symptoms:

1. Fans start to turn, 2 red LEDs light up on the board
2. after 2-3 secs the PJ shuts down
3. it jumps back to 1. automatically and would do that constantly if not interrupted.

On the Display at its back there are only two dashes, no other error code.
The CRTs don't light up either.

Thanks to anyone who can give a hint what to look for,

Thomas

My guess is that the power supply is bad. Very hard to repair, not worth sending in due to postage costs, but I've got good working spares at $125 incl shipping. In fact, I'm scrapping about 5 NEc PG sets this weekend, and I can send you a pile of boards for the cost of shipping if you want on top of the power supply.

you could also try disconnecting the focus and convergence board power connectors (5 or 6 pin large connector on each one of those boards, to see if that's causing power supply shutdown, but with two red LEDs on the deflection board usually indicates a fault in the power supply, especially since you have no error codes on that back LED display.

Where are you located?

Hi,

thanks for your quick reaction.

I did like Curt proposed and disconnected the two boards, then turned the device on- no change in what happens.
It seems then to be power supply.
I live in Germany.

@Curt,
thanks for your offer.
I am not confident enough to do some soldering work should that be needed.
I already caught myself a few years ago with the thought to kick out the PJ as it is quite noisy.
Now with this incident perhaps I should say goodbye to the CRT- PJ era.
A tried a DLP PJ at a friends house but seem to be susceptible to the infamous Rainbow-Effect....

I'll think about it...

Confused

Kind regards from Germany,

Thomas

Actually, make that $175 considering you're overseas from me. There's no soldering involved in replacing the power supply.

Hi Case,

yes: 230 V ± 10% at 50 Hz.
Using the wrong voltage might result in a nice living room firework though Wink

The power supplies can be changed internally. It involves a jumper or 2 and ideally changing the values of the filter network on the input. It's in the manual.

Yes, thanks for the clarification.
I found a page where they said that too. However the mentioned that in relation with the NEC XG series.

That means I have to decide, whether I want to invest some bucks into the NEC, bearing in mind that it might not work again, or break down with one of those capacitor issues.

Well, I think I'll end the CRT PJ era. (my wife will be happy about that too..). That was/ is a fascinating technology with a lot more soul to it than the digital PJs.

I want to thank all of you for your time & advice and wish you all happy watching with your sets.

Kind Regards from Germany,

Thomas

Garbage!! Even though I have 7 acres of land, I live in a very small 1 bedroom home, 6m x 7m, and I have an XG installed in my bedroom, and a Barco CineMAX in my lounge room.

No more excuses!! Laughing Laughing Laughing
