Is anyone running HDBaseT? I have the walls apart and trying to decide if I should do this or not?

All the high end systems are using it now that have centralized equipment racks. HDBaseT may start being implemented on things like TV's and BD players to replace HDMI. I would really like to get rid of HDMI forever and have something more reliable so I am all for it.

All you have to do is run CAT cable so yes, you should run while the walls are open. I tell everyone to run at least two (but preferably 4) CAT6 cables from their equipment to their projector. This allows for HDMI over cat, but also for just about anything else needed down the line.

Awesome, My house is fully wired for every room (at least 4 cat connections in every room, bathrooms included Wink )

I plan on either putting in some cat6 cable I got from a local business a while back, or waiting a bit longer to upgrade the cat5e I have installed currently, and then go for the Cat7 cable.

I'm with you on the HDMI Craig, I would LOVE to see it gone in the place of something like this. It's nice to know I'm future-proofed Very Happy

I've worked on several systems that use a Crestron matrixed switch that have no HDMI ports, only HDBaseT. At the TV/Projector end there is a NDBaseT to HDMI converter. The thought is that in a couple years we won't need the convert anymore because the TV will have HDBaseT on the back panel along with HDMI, component, and composite.

Lumagen has told me that when HDBaseT gets more common that they may release a VP with HDBaseT right on it.

One CAT cable is a lot easier to manage than a bulky expensive HDMI cable. You also won't have to stupid issues of HDMI not working randomly. Also long runs are no problem.

But I assume it will still have HDCP or some similar stupid "anti-piracy" setup that won't slow down the pirates but make it damn near impossible for honest people to use their gear?

Naturally. HDCP is the same and the system is backward compatible with HDMI through the converters.

Sounds good. I am going to run the Cat in the walls. I must confess that I haven't seen any good websites with instructions. AVS has a couple of threads, but most everything else is product or custom install. I am starting to think this is going to be popular at Cedia.

Basically you don't really need instructions just yet. All I would do is run the wires and not even bother to terminate them until they are needed. You never know what you will wind up sending through the cables so keep your ends open Wink

It looks like plenum Cat 5e at Lowes is $60 for 250 feet. I will probably be able to do multiple runs. Smile

I would suggest running CAT6 and getting it from Monoprice. Their CAT6 is awesome and you can use multiple colors if you want which can help keep track of cables. 1000' is around $100.

+1 on this, Cat6 can handle speeds of 1gbps and higher, I think up to 10gbps. Cat 5e can only go upto 1gbps max due to the bandwidth limitation.

The real difference isn't the thickness of the copper wires, its the thicker insulation and the addition of a + shaped piece of insulation inside the cable that separates all the colored pairs from the different colors (ex: white green/green separate from white brown/brown)

This provides much better performance because there is far less interference between the pairs, and as a result provides better bandwidth and speed. Cat6 is a must if your going to use it for anything HD or data intensive.

You're in Miami. Call a low-voltage distributor like Graybar in the morning; you should be be able to get a spool, use what you need and Craigslist the rest.

I guess I should have ordered from Mono as I won't get to this until the weekend, because of more delays. A rhetorical question - Why do New Yorkers act like they know what they are talking about when in actuality they have no clue?

Thanks Crabb. There is a Graybar a couple of miles away.

I was going to ask the custom installer that has the G90s to give me some CAT6 on the chance that I might buy his pjs. Unfortunately I don't want him bugging me all the time to buy his G90s for $50. Twisted Evil
