|
|
I have finally had some time to try and set up BV701s with 1080i, and managed to get an image, but ...
The image looks really soft in 1080i. I can't get a good focus. I have tried to change both mechanical and electrical focus. Is this because of the 18000+ hours of the tubes, the nature of old ES focus or because I'm operating close to the bandwidth limit?
I want to get it better, and there seem to be several people on this forum that have manages 1080i on a BV701 and are happy with it.
When I try the internal test patterns, the 31.5kHz/60Hz HDTV ATV is much sharper than 33.7kHz/60Hz HDTV HI-VISION.
As far as I know 1080i is close to the 33.7kHz.
When I feed it from at HTC I might be able to set up a non standard resolution close to 31.5kHz, but if I want to feed it from a standard HDMI (I have HDFury2 if I need to) I guess that wont work.
Even so, I find it hard to get nVidia GT610 on the HTC to remember my setting, even with the custom resolution utility (cru) program.
On lower resolutions, 640x480, windows text is sharp and easilly read, but at 1080i it's a blur.
My ECP4100 look much better at 1080i, but I want the BV to work because of more brightness.
Is one solution to get a new control board and deflection board for higher bandwidth, or will the high hour tubes still limit the sharpness of the image?

To the above, I say.. YES!
Teh bandwidth will have the least to do with it, it's 18K worth of tube hours that will do it.
All you can try is to see if the astig magnets on the tube neck are set properly. that can also cause it. If not, you need new tubes. I might have a used set that are far low hour..

I would add that those TAC-4 lenses aren't doing anything good above 480i, I had the pleasure to use TAC-4 lenses on my PG xtra and I can say they were no where near resolving (optically) even 720P, then swapped them to HD-6C ML (which I still using) and they resoling 720P just perfectly

THe 701s uses Toshiba 180 tubes. It uses HD6 lenses, I've never seen a Barco 70X series with TAC lenses.

He posted a picture earlier about the machine, and the sticker clearly said TAC-4.

Yes, the lenses are in fact TAC-4, the blue one seem to be color corrected.
Maybe it's because it's just a Vision, not Data or Graphics, or when first purchased they chose simpler lenses to keep the price down
I have HD-6C in my ECP4100. I will make a swap and see what happens.
The tubes says 180DGB22

Wow, well, that's a first! No question the proper HD6 lenses will look a lot better. Take off the lenses, put on sunglasses and see how sharp the tube faces are. That will tell you a lot about whether you want to keep going with this set. You won't be able to change the set of a BD701s, it's too much work.

You must have some knowledge of SGIs to have seen that. Maybe I should remove the space in the topic
I have a collection of about 60 SGIs, and it's partly becauses of the SGIs I got interested in CRT PJs too.

Ohh, darn. I just bought myself a set of color corrected Delta HD-145N ...
I should read the forum more often
Well, I have a metal workshop at my disposal if I need to do some adjustments

New lenses in place. I couldn't find any obstacle when I put them in.
The only problem was that my screwdriver was suddenly to short since the lenses are longer. I couldn't fasten the plastic nuts below the lenses.
Probably an improvement, but it is still hard to read Windows menu/icon text. Should I be able to read that on a BV701 at 1080i?
I also found that at this higher scanrate, the image got brighter. Turning brightness/sharpness down a bit made the image look a bit sharper. At least I perceived it so.
I'm gonna do some more testing, checking a movieclip, comparing image to my ECP4100.

I don't think so, it is not an easy task (though not impossible) even for my 6PG xtra which is considerably better (sharper) pj. Set your text size in the OS to large.
