I cannot get V7.61 firmware to operate I have tried RWI 5.10 and 5.09. I currently run V7.41 with RWI 5.09. Is there a special version of the controller?
When I place V7.61 in the controller the projector cycles off and on.

Hi,
First, are both EPROMS of the same type and speed?

7.61 was the latest software version for Graphics 808S. You probably have a Data 808S and for those, version 7.41 was the latest.

Definitely BG808s Frame from Curt. The controller could be from another set though. The part numbers are the same for the Controller and Frame between BD808s and BG808s.

Hi,
Different types will have a different number of address lines. Unused address lines will have to be tied to a logical level for stable operation (see pinout on page 2 of the datasheet: http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheets/120/489553_DS.pdf). Compare the number of address lines e.g. for the 27C040 (A0-A18) to the ones of a 27C080 (A0-A19).
Different speeds are defined by the access time printed on the device (usually -100, -120, -150 etc.). This is the time in nanoseconds that the device will need in order to return data when selected through the address lines. If the access time is too high, this may cause a problem.
Just for Your reference: The BG808s software I have here (7.21) is on a 27C040 -120 (512KBytes, 120ns).
Another idea: Maybe Barco increased the EPROM size for the new software version (e.g. from 27C020 to 27C040). In this case it could have been necessary to connect the previously unsued pin 31 to address line A18 of the processor bus. The procedere for this should be explained in some kind of technical note etc.
Maybe somebody knows about it...

This is a 27c040 -90 for the v7.61
I have a v7.31 that does work in the projector and its a 27c040 -120
I have another V7.61 on a 27c801 -100
None of the v7.61 chips work.

Very interesting!
In general, the 27C040 -90 should work. Same size as the original, just a little faster in returning the data. Although there's a little chance that the read process is so time-critical in its design that it will require a specific access time. In this case the -90 chip would be too fast.
The 27C801 is a different story. It has the double capacity of a 27C040 and an additional address line that has to be taken care of. I've heard of different revisions of the controller board. Maybe You have an older one where the extra address line (pin1 of the EPROM socket) is open or connected to GND or VCC.
On newer revisions it should be connected to the A19 line of the processor bus. I have a controller schematic which is labelled 7625115-2 from June 1995 where this is the case.
Check if there's continuity between pin 1 of the EPROM socket and pin 51 of the main processor (IC1, 68EC000).
Refer to the picture below...

Thanks for all the information. Its really annoying in that all these controllers have the same part number. I have thought before now its actually a variation in the controller so I will check all the ones I have.

I always knew a simple concept:
Firmware 808= Eprom 27C040
Firmware 808s= Eprom 27C080
Maybe I'm wrong?

I have both eproms and both have V7.61 firmware.
I will see if I can find a controller to suit 27C080? Not sure how to identify one as the part number is probably the same.

Part (R7625115) and PCB (780382) numbers are the same for all controllers indeed, but different revisions. Try to swap the controller with a higher PCB revision. I believe the last one was 11.

I have one V11 PCB. Which chip do I use as there are two 27C040 and 27C080.

CTRL has to be 27C40 and RWI 27C64.
CTRL 7.61 and RWI 5.10 is a working combination i know of.

You sorted it out! Great!
This might be helpful information to others upgrading their Firmware...

It's well worth the effort. The geometry controls do a far better job than v7.41 and the contrast is notably improved.
Thanks for the input.
