Shut up Mullet!
Guys, as most of you know, I spend little time setting up projectors, I spend most of my time repairing boards and doing quick setups for the sets that I sell. Rarely do I do full setups, and yeah, it's been coming up on 3 years since I've watched my own sad HT....
So this weekend I set up a low hour G90 with a new green tube in it, no wear on the R and B at all. Customer had it on an 80" wide screen, and the set replaced a G70 that he bought new a bunch of years ago. Very low wear on his tubes. He had a killer room, Revel speakers all around ($5K each for the surrounds!), not sure on the amps, and a Faroudja DVP1080 processor. Customer knows his HT equipment as well, so he actually taught me a few things while I was there.
You also know that I'm not ISF certified, and I did explain up front that while I own two colorimeters, I've never taken the time to learn them. Spending 12 hours in front of a set like Craig or Ken do just doesn't interest me, and isn't my forte.
So I spent about 3 hours on the set, which is what I'd consider a 'good' setup time. When I was done, all I could do is sit back on his nice comfy couch and say 'HOLY &^%&^$#$, that's a damn fine picture!'
I'd go as far as saying that it's in the top 1 or 2 sets I've ever set up. We played with the gamma adjustments on his Moome card as well, and it was all I could to go get up off the couch and go home. I wanted to stay for the rest of the day and watch movies.
The only thing I did notice is that there is a VERY slight difference in calibration between the internal test patterns, and a grid sent to the set by the Faroudja. I noticed it mainly on the red convergence, so once I'd tweaked the internal test pattern, I used the Faroudja to do some slight zone tweaking where the red was peeking out of the edges in a couple of areas.
Freakin' amazing, what came out of this Sony, his massive room treatment, and those awesome Revel speakers. It's got me all fired up anew to do my room this summer with the stack!
I may have a meet!

Get a Radiance!!!!! To this day I still personally prefer the G90 over any other CRT that was made. The G90 needs the fan mods to quiet it down, but once done and especially if you put a hush box around them, the result is awesome. Of course, don't forget the proper Green C-element. Though you will lose light output (10%), the colors will be da bomb. Also, the Radiance will also dial in the saturated red that is produced with the red C-element as well as Gamma. The G90 stack is a site to behold. One of the BEST pictures on the planet

Ok we gotta get back on topic LOL.
Here is what I recommend:
Quantity (2) Moome Sony HDMI for each projector
Quantity (1) Radiance XS to take advantage of dual output to each G90
Quantity (1) Darbee
Quantity (1) Professional calibration
Quantity (1) Herb to enjoy the experience
Quantity (1) High end bottle of Cab to enhance the experience.
**EDIT** Please add Quantity (2) Remove and replace light green C-element with proper green and Quantity (2) FAN MODS.

Nah, I was Team Barco for the longest time, even though I had a 9500 on my ceiling. Was going to put up one of the 909s I had here, but after seeing the G90 in action, man, I don't know...
Actually I do. I am putting up a G90 stack as I said before. It won't begin to happen for a couple of months yet. I'm out of town pretty much for the rest of the month, then we can maybe hope for some sunshine in May to pour concrete for the pig pen. It's right outside the theatre right now, so I'm moving my piggies across the yard. Even though the windows are closed, it's amazing how fine hay dust got into the room, so I'm fixing that before I gut the room. Putting in a riser for the rear seats, building a wall with speakers behind/beside it for the screen, running potlight wiring in the ceiling (saw some funky LED potlights at a supplier today that looked pretty sweet), wiring in the 6 zone Lutron lighting controller that I was given by a customer years ago, wiring in more than just a single 15 amp circuit for the room, blah blah..
More wiring for hte pair of projectors, AC wiring, etc.
Then, re-drywall the ceiling, paint everything in sight black, room treatment.
Then... reseed the backyard and have a damn meet!
No, we're not having an effing pig roast you sadists!!!!!

To this day the most amazing projector I have ever seen is a G90.
What is more impressive is that the one I saw was just playing DVDs!!
It was back in 2006 approximately, when we were still craving HD content wherever we could find it, especially in Europe.
The G90 I saw belonged to the brother of a friend of mine, and I was really shocked at the amazing image it threw because I used my own equipment that I used on my Marquee 8500. I used a Denon 2800 or 2900 DVD player, a Lumagen Vision HDP and then we just popped in a DVD of Lost: Holy Image Depth Batman!!!
I had never seen anything like this in my entire life. I believe I almost got motion sickness from the incredible depth the image had! The image was ridiculously bright. projecting on a 120" diagonal screen. I believe it was a Studiotek 130. Amazing shaprness, clarity, out-of-this-world focus and a 3D quality that has to be seen to be believed. Since then I have seen a Barco Cinemax, a Barco Reality 909, a Barco 1209s and non-s, and none of these even come near to that G90.
It is truly a dream projector.
