I have a NEC 6PG Xtra with the HD144 or 145 colored lenses, and all three of them have what look like snow flakes in them. What is that? Why are they there and can I get rid of them?

I'm not sure I was able to capture this well. You can see a crystalline at 10 o'clock, and a smaller one at 1 o'clock with a smattering of other ones. With the pj on, it looks like there is a ton of dust particles also.
The lenses are HD-144.

Google image search for 'lens fungus' and see if some of those images don't look exactly like yours. At some point, your HD-144's were probably in a dusty environment, then probably in a damp environment (basement, warehouse, etc.). The spores grew and voila! Fungus.

The heck you say. I thought "fungus" was just something (not really fungus) that formed in the glycol. I didn't realize you could actually get a fungus growing in the lenses.
If those "snowflakes" are actually on the lens, especially the front lens, there's a good chance they won't have any noticeable effect on the image. It's far from the focal plane of the lenses so obstructions there don't focus sharply on the screen. You can stick fingers in front of the lens and just darken the image a bit.

Fungus grows on pretty much anything. Replace the lenses with color filtered HD-144 lenses if you decide to do so. Seems like there were a couple of sets available here in the for sale section recently...

I thought they were the color-filtered lenses?!?
Can't the lenses be separated and cleaned? Is it worth the effort?

The front element can be removed pretty easily. This is the part that moves for corner focus. That will allow you to clean the front and back of the outermost lens and the front of the second lens. Going further is quite involved and not recommended. I think CZEddie had a pictorial on taking apart a lens and it was an adventure.

Buy used lenses from Curt, if he has any, or find a seller here or elsewhere or live with it. You can pretty much forget about cleaning the lenses...JMO
