This week I went to look a G90 that this guy was selling. The owner is a custom integrator or whatever you call the Crestron people.
Anyway, we were talking and he mentioned that the pj used to be owned by a friend of his. So, my question was what did he do go digital? The guy was like no he died in a motorcycle accident. I guess he had a crotch rocket and was doing something stupid (par for the course down here). We talk a little more and he says "Yeah the wife just wanted it gone" and "Without Brian, she was going to move". At that point the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I asked if that was the same Brian that lived in Hallandale and he said yes. I just went "Wow", as I had been to his house and seen his set up.
A back history on this. Brian had contacted me over at AVS in '07. This was about the time that I had recommended the Wilsonart DW as a screen. Clarence bought one, reviewed it and it went ballistic with the championing from Wbassett and others. Brian wanted me to stop by and take a look at his screen, because he was having a problem with it. I think he had PMed Clarence about it as well.
I stopped by and hung out for several hours. It was a new home and he had done a great job on his HT. I vividly remember the G90 suspended about 4 or 5 feet from the ceiling. He had a problem with hot spotting and I realized that Wilsonart DW could have different gloss levels from the same product number. I felt bad that he got a lemon of a screen, but at least it didn't cost him much.
After I left, I never had any more contact with him. I emailed and PMed him several times with no reply. Now, I know why. It sucks for the wife and kid. I think the kid was only months old when I visited.
As for the G90, I told the guy I would get back to him. I would only consider buying one for back up and therefore would only spend very little. This guy still wants a good price. The main reason I wanted to see it was he has a Moome card in it. Unfortunately it is version 1. If I don't go digital, then I will go back and consider this.
One final thing, this guy told me that there are still a hand full of G90 owners in South Florida. I wonder if we are the G90 capital of the world?

Wow, talk about a sad story! And a small world indeed. As for the G90s, I'm willing to bet theres a few more out there that no one here even knows exist. Someone, somewhere, just discovered one sitting in a basement, and is probably going "What the heck is this?"

The antique lawn tractor guys maintain excel document registries for all the tractors, each with S/Ns, owner, year made, etc. Has anyone ever setup something like this? I wondered about this before, but can't recall if I posted anything. At $40K or whatever new and only being made for several years, I can't imagine more than what -- a several thousand (?) -- G90s were ever made and only a fraction are left in use? I mean, if every state averages 5 per big city and 4 cities/state , lets say that is 20 per state of 1000 total machines. Double that for safe-estimating and double again for global sales and I max at 4,000. Not sure if my basis is crazy, but number seems believable.
All of that said, that is awful. I am all for crotch rockets, powered parachutes, and anything else thrill-seeking...but if you have kids, c'mon - be responsible and safe and wait until the kids grow-up. And the finances for the family aren't my concern -- it is for their well-being. And I hope the kids/wife can forgive him, let go over the anger/sadness of his selfishness, and live in peace. I starting to fly and build gyroplane for a bit. After losing my two best friends (except my wife) in a plane crash, I decided to stop until the kids were out of college/or settled.

For a few years I was travelling all over the country doing sports and political events(mostly tea party) and I was amazed how many times I met someone who had mutual friends, It is such a big world but we are all connected. AMAZING really when you think about it.
