i had an idea pop into my head this morning.

is there a device that would take analog inputs (L+R) and stream that to an IP address? pretty much all devices can play streaming content.

What I want to do is create that stream and broadcast it over my LAN - not going out to the internet at all.

I have a squeezebox, i have airport express and i can play music over those from my library, what i want is to be able to stream my analog sources like vinyl or R2R tapes over my computer in the office or my iphone outside.

i don't want to hook up a laptop into the system - no room in the rack and no desire to have a computer in that room

There are lots of webcams out there with sound - you just point a browser at the IP and you have babyTV (or doggyTV or pot belly pig TV) but is there a similar device that is audio only and take a stereo input?

Oh, sorry... I was thinking your system was laid out differently than it obviously is. You threw me off with the Airport Express... I was thinking your 'system' was in a different place than the R2R or something. Never mind.

The only thing I can think of offhand is Sonos Connect... It has a line input that's designed to distribute audio to other Sonos devices... Fundamentally, it's a UPnP device... Sonos has apps to control the Connect, but maybe there's some third-party UPnP client app for your PC and iPhone that would stream from the Connect.

yeah, sonus came to mind as well but aside from the investment of other sonus devices for output and the general cost of sonus, i've heard that sonus was moving away from streaming devices.

Sonos moving away from streaming devices? Their entire business is built on streaming devices. Question

My recommendation wasn't investing in a Sonos system, but rather just a Sonos Connect. The Sonos system is based on UPnP, which consists of Media Servers and Media Renderers (clients). I haven't researched it, but since the Connect is both Server and Renderer, you should be able to stream from Connect to a UPnP client on Windows or iOS to stream the line input.

Just an idea.

Oh, and the Sonos UPnP implementation isn't 'vanilla' UPnP, so I have no idea how workable this is. No doubt it would be easy with the PC in your office as a client... I just don't know about an iOS app.

yep, according to the product guide, the Connect will stream input from the Line-in RCAs.

but as you said - how many non-sonos clients are there fpr mac/ios/pc

hmmm,

thanks Steve!

That looks interesting. Given, the price, it's obviously aimed at specialty/commercial... $455 on Amazon. Shocked

the barix site has it for 350. still pricey and i'd hoped for better than mp3, but hoping for redbook wsa a bit agressive.

still, $350 is probably at least what i'd be paying after sonos was done with my wallet.
