a Sony VPH 1270Q. $50. Supposedly everything works. Low hours on tubes. No remote. I don't know much about projectors. Researched this one a little bit. Seems outdated but decent quality. Price is cheap. What do you guys think?

Won't be needing HDMI. Will be connecting a PC to it. Is that about what these things are worth? $50?

Some might pay more.

1080i will look great. 720p as well. thats the great think about CRT's you can try any resolution an see how it looks since it is not a fixed pixel display.

For 2.4 aspect movies you should use 1920x800p@60 or even 72hz.

50 bucks is a very nice price if the tubes are above a 7 wear rating Id have to say.

How would I go about rating tubes? What should I look for? I'm going to see it tonight.

Look at this:

Make sure you remove all the lenses, judging through the lenses can fool you.

So should I bring a screwdriver with me? Is it a lengthy process to remove those lenses?

If you can screw fast it takes less time Wink
I seem to recall one scerw is extremely hard to access, and easy to break the lens housing, other than that it is pretty straight forward.
Look at this too:

Nah, you need to pull the LVPS from under the tubes, it's a PITA, and you'll freak the seller out. Take an LED flashlight with you, look through the lenses and check the blue tube for wear. If you see wear, it's one or two steps worse than what it appears to be through the lens.

Almost bulletproof chassis, and I've got one set of decent tubes here for it if you need a set for $60 plus shipping. My last full set of 07MP tubes...

Good deal for $50 if it works. Great to watch movies on, desktop is a little hard to read at 1080i, but 1024x768 looks good.

Picked it up last night. That thing is HEAVY! Didn't expect it to be so large either but that's not an issue for me. Built like a tank. Date of manufacture Nov. 1995. As suggested by Curt (thank you), shone an LED flashlight into the blue tube. Looked perfectly white inside. Powers on. All tubes produce light. Image is upside down but that's just a matter of me flipping it. Seller told me that it's been sitting in his basement for quite some time unused and he's estimating that there are only about 100 hours on those tube but I'm taking that with a grain of salt. I noticed that it was missing a flip cover for controls on the projector. Not essential to operation but would be nice if I could find a replacement (not sure if possible). Got $10 off for that so $40 total!

Good score at $40! The 1270 has no hour counter on it, so it's possible that it's only 100 hours, but I doubt it. If I had $.01 for every time that was told to me over the years....Wink

Have fun with it, post some pix!

I have to disagree with removal of the PSU, when working on my friends 1272, I never removed the PSU, I just used a very long philips screw driver to access the lens screws. It saves a lot more time and works just fine. A good magnetic tip helps out too.

Oh, yeah, I guess you can do it that way. I always use an 8mm driver to take the nuts off, and I take the whole lens and metal bracket assembly off. Your way works too.

Be sure you clean the back of the lenses along with the tube faces. That air gap, esp on the blue tube gathers dust like crazy, causing poor focus and massive haloing.

OK Next question... What is up with those connections? How do I connect any modern source to it without spending $300 on an HDMI card? Is there a component to RGBHV adapter? Should I use RGB monitor output from my laptop? I have a PS3 that I would love to connect to this thing but, like I said, don't want to spend $300 for HDMI card. Any other way around it?
