How would you rate my green tube wear? Curt and Craig have always posted that the G90's are tough on the Green tube. How is it looking for 2182 hours..

Looks good, and is indeed on the light side of what I've seen for G90s at 2100 hours. I'd say the green that I had here out of an 800 hour set was about the same. Am going to put a tube almost like this one into the G90 that's going on my ceiling this weekend. You're good for another 10 years.

Keep in mind, tube wear is directly proportional to your contrast settings and how well the projector was set up originally based on throw distance.

The original owner had a 120 inch diagonal screen. He said that it was set up as the 120" setting that are in the manual. It looks like machine was set up pretty good. The raster setting aren't bad.

Curt I'm happy for you. Getting your new Sony G90 finally up on the ceiling!! BTW, I looked at your EV horns for sale.. These were the swimming pool takeout that we talked about? They look good. In one of the pictures I seen "a" G90. Is that the unit that is going to be hoisted to the ceiling?

Hopefully you give us a detailed write up! Pictures included!!!

It's also highly dependent on what you watch... If you watch a lot of space movies or "dark stormy night" movies, you won't get nearly as much wear as if you watch a lot of Ice Age or snow skiing videos. Wink

Hal, it's one of the G90s I have here. Green tubes just showed up, so they're getting retubed. Not mine of course, I get the used tattered stuff. Smile

Frankly, I've posted before, the whole HT experience kinda bores me. I haven't turned on my 9500 in 2 1/2 years to watch anything, and when I went to fire it up last year for the first time, the power supply went BANG! Took me 3 months to replace it, only to find that the glycol in the blue tube went deep urine yellow. Smile

Since the set always has had a bit of convergence drift, and I wanted something else up there, I'm putting up a G90. I've got an HDMI card for it as well, so I'll throw that in. I'll probably put 20 hours on it, get bored with it, and it will get turned off for another 6 months.

Go figure.

I see two slight wear patterns, I would imagine you could fit a 16x9 image inside of them, depending on your throw distance.

I did a quick adjustment in Photoshop so you can see it better.

Kellener, Thanks for the Photoshop pic. My screen is 109 inches wide and 60 inches tall. Right now I have the G90 144 inches away from the screen. I think that I need to move it towards the screen.

Curt, best wishes on the install!! Regardless, I'm excited for you.

Where ever the previous owner set the contrast, you should turn it up from there. At that rate of phosphor decay, you will run out of emissions before you burn through the phosphor. You may as well get some more enjoyment out of that G90 with higher contrast.

Move the projector forward until you are up against the original wear pattern. That will be your ideal throw distance.

Interesting as we normally only seem to talk about phosphor wear how long should good tube emissions last on EM tubes??

Well, the G90 is unusual because it can push really high contrast settings and still maintain focus. If you increase contrast you are increasing the emission. Usually I can get 12k - 15k hours out of a green tube in a G90 (as long as the projector doesn't get relocated).

I've posted the photo several times here. I have a client in SF whose G90 has 17k+ hours on the tubes; original owner and original location. On the last calibration I set his green gain to MAX and his contrast to 95. The projector still looks great; bright (13 flt), and in focus. He has moderate wear on the phosphor, but at this point we won't be able to balance the grayscale on the next go around.

I hate pulling out tubes with light wear but that have low emissions...

LOL, Craig must be rolling over in his CIR90 case thinking about the unmounted G90s of Curt and I. Mr. Green Mr. Green

Curt must be rubbing off on me (I swear we didn't sleep in the same bed in Chicago Mr. Green ). My interest in HT has really taken a nose dive in the last two years or so. In the 90s and 00s, I would read every HT magazine out there. In the 00s, I couldn't get enough of AVS. Now, I barely read the mags and mostly go to AVS to read the programming threads. Unless work gets in the way, I will drive out to Cedia mostly for the adventure and to see friends along the way and at the show (Crabb, you better be attending Smile).

I think part of this might be from the high level of video and audio quality that is available today. If someone would have told me that I could have a really nice high end HT for $5k or less then I would have thought it might have been unrealistic. Heck, I could get that figure under $3k pretty easily.

Of course, maybe I am just old. Razz
