Can you mod a rear projection Sony TV like a CRT Projector? Coworker wants to know...he blew out his 2 year old LCD and took a 10 year old Sony 4:3 out of storage. Not sure of any capabilities as I asked that a few months back but perhaps someone can answer as I forgot everything. But can any older units be converted to take true VGA like a projector or even a card or connection upgrade? Dude is frustrated about Samsung warranty.

Almost nothing consumer-grade of that vintage will do anything but 480i or possibly 480i/p.
Even the later HD sets would only handle only 480i/p and 1080i and either wouldn't display 720p at all, or in the case of Sony sets, scaledit to 1080i to display.
Unless it has an HD component, DVI, or VGA input on it, don't waste your time trying to watching anything but SD on it.

Since it's a Sony the mods are pretty straight forward. Just acquire a semi large hammer, adjust unit into smaller pieces and then transport to the trash container. It will then be in it's well deserved condition..

a.) What Dragan said.
b.) If the owner really like RPTVs then he would more impressed with an EM focusing ampro or barco retro set. Consumer RPTV-s are more like simole CRT TV-s with convergence feature, there is nothing you can do.

Hi,
It is like most of the others described. Consumer devices are an absolute no-go. Professional stuff is different. I've been using a Barco Graphics 801s with LC lenses (HD-18) for quite some time which was made from a Retro Graphics 801s. It just needed a donor case from a scrapped unit, some custom brackets for mounting of the LC tubes and matching C-Elements (from a Sony G70) for the lenses.
The picture was quite nice for an 8" ES focus unit...
Regards,
