Last week I watched Skyfall. It was better than Quantum of Solstice, but not as good as Casino Royal, IMO. There seems to be this necessity to get into the character's personal life, or rather the personal lives of the peripheral characters. This movie seemed to be nothing more than an explanation to change out the M and Q characters.
BTW, is it really that easy to plot your strike against an official in the British government? Really? Hmm ...

The new bonds are awful IMO. There's no swagger, one liners, quips like the old ones (pre 90's) bonds.
In the new one he goes to Q for gadgets and gets a gun with a fingerprint reader and Q then says no gadgets anymore...I mean come on that's 50% of Bond's awesomeness.

If you remember in Casino Royal he was just given his 00 status. The Daniel Craig bond movies are showing a younger grittier pissed off at the world and serious Bond. He is struggling with inner demons related to the death/betrayal of his love interest and the death of his parents. These movies are at the start of his "Spy" career.
The Bond that Connery played was much older/mature hence the suave and elegant/refined nature of the character. He has yet to discover his true self or purpose in the world. Or, accepted what he truly is. IMHO every Bond after Moore was a joke! With exception of the horrid portrayal of Bond by George Lazenby in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
I happen to enjoy the more rough/dark Bond that Craig is playing at the moment. You can almost see the pain in his eyes he is struggling within while also having to deal with the evil outside.
The new M is an introduction of the original M. He has brought Moneypenny with him and I think you will start to see a tie in to the older more mature Bond in the up coming films. Craig has taken his option for two more films. After that there is talk that some of the earlier Connery films might be rebooted. That is speculation though.
Look at Craig's bond as the young Bull on the hill that wanted to run down the hill to screw one sow and Connery's as the old bull that wanted to walk down and screw them all 8)
That is my two cents on the situation....

Craig is fine as Bond. In fact, I like him as Bond. BUT, he now can't shoot straight, already is showing signs of wear and tear, and everyone around him is now dead or retired. And that's just in the Bond world Craig assumes.
Now add to that the story in Skyfall seems more soap opera than anything else--he's not battling a world dominating figure, but someone after his boss in a personal revenge story.
I hope to hell they make Craig's next offering really, really brutal, much like how the Batman reinvention brought a more darker side to life. I don't want a Bond more caring of his boss.

I think the allegiance to the Female M came from her grooming a younger man into what he was thus far. He might also feel he owes her his life after the political pressure placed on her to turn Bond in for the killing of the bomb maker at the embassy in Casino Royal.
Skyfall was great! IMHO. It alluded to Bonds past. M's past and her being ruthless in the name of Queen and Country. It was mainly more of a character development story in a way I would agree though.

My friends take on it was DAHM that was long! Then if you think about it allot of the time is setting Bond's back story and some of M's back story as well. It was good to see the Aston again but they needed to move along while at Bond's home.
AND how disappointing is Q? I LOVED those scenes in the old Bond movies where they were in Q division and all the lads were testing flame throwers and exploding pens. Shame on Sam Mendes for excluding the Q division and fluffing it off in the script with a mere mention by M as "Q isn't set up just yet" bollocks! Bring back Q division!

Character development? He's a secret agent! You don't need to know about his past. All I know is that he has a license to kill, bangs a lot of chicks, has a sick car and gadgets and when put in an impossible situations he gets out of it. This movie had none of that, unless it was during the parts I dozed off.
And seriously, has affirmative action taken place at 00 headquarters in order to hire moneypenny?

I have always believed the problem with some of these younger directors is that even with an established film and book classic that has continued to endure, for some reason, they feel they have to do things to be constantly appealing to and attracting a so-called "younger" audience. This "logic" sometimes forgets why the franchise has lasted as long as it has to begin with and underestimates the audience it is attempting to attract. Bond is Bond, all action, gadgets and beautiful women. Just because the cold war is long over, spies haven't disappeared in the world, there are other stories and the Bond legacy and all its characters can continue, provided the story lines are of proper quality.
My son is 23 years old and laughs his ass off at old Honeymooners episodes on the Comedy network!
Sometimes things are better left unchanged.

Part of what was also bugging me in the Skyfall outing was how relatively easy it was for someone with a gun to simply walk into cabinet meeting with the PM and raise terror. Really? I'm surprised no one hasn't taken out the British government before.
Also, what office building, commercial or government, has natural gas setup to fill rooms with so some terrorist can find a use for it? I mean, COME ON. LOL This ain't a Chemistry lab with Bunsen burners. The movie made me feel like I could break in, and I'm a smuck.
