In another topic I asked for scan rates of a BV701s

https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=32825.html

Some people told me it was no good idea to get this because of the possible 10000 hours on it, but I went ahead and bought this thing anyway just for the fun of it.
Maybe I should have listened to you guys Smile
Anyway, if you can interpret the picture projected on the inside of an aluminium garage door, you will see a "RUN TIME" of 18685 hours... Don't know if it is the original tubes.

It is from a planetarium. It's an R9000722. Manufactured 1997. I got some original documents, the invoice from 1997 for example Smile
It was floor mounted. The scheimpflug was set for the 4 m wide screen range, and that is about as big as it got when I moved it backwards, until I got a "focused" image.
I can't see any burn in on the tube faces (looking through the lenses) and also images on the tube face don't look so soft.
Well maybe the blue is a bit softer that the other two. The blue (just the blue) has a color corrected lens so maybe it has been driven with more light output.
The brightness was only set to 10, but contrast was set to 85.

I can se something that looks like dust, inside the lenses, between tube and lens maybe. I don't know. It's all over the face, evenly distrubuted. Could it be fungus that looks like dust?

The "HOLD DOWN HD" yellow led is lit when I hook it up to a laptop. Otherwise it is off. I guess it don't like the laptop resolution/refresh rate, but I do get an image.

I think it has a line doubler installed. Will it try to line double all interlaced signals, even 1080i, or will it only improve 480i to 480p as I read in an old manual?

I also got a laserdisc player with it and the laserdisc they have shown on it. It is mostly black space, a star or planet or galaxy here and there, moving around. So I guess that's why the tube faces looks ok after all these hours.

Check the lining up of those lights. THe yellow one is the 'coincidence' light, which just means that you're using an existing memory location. Nothing wrong with the set.

THe fact it came from a planetarium means it projected a lot of black, so there's a good chance the tubes are decent. Good score, have fun with it!

Here in europe CRT-s are not so cheap/common. Even 8" EMF machines can go for neat prices.

SGI: I saw your pj has TAC-4 lenses you should swap them to at least HD-6 or better yet HD-145 lenses, they are much sharper!

18K hours is barely broken in. Try a Marquee with 68,000 hours! Smile

I think the highest BArco I've seen was also around 60K hours, that was a 1209s SEOS unit that was on 24/7.

I think they are not original tubes, planetariums usually serviced those pretty well. and the hours is a good sign, means it was dependable, no reason for it to break now Mr. Green

get rid of those lenses, hd6 at least or 145 if you can find a cheap set, hur många kronor kostade det>?

what brand is the ld player? i have a pioneer that I havent turned on in...8 years maybe..

gjaky is right. CRTs don't show up very frequently in Europe, and especially around where I live, I think.

Well this one wasn't for free. I did pay about $125 for the PJ and $100 for shipping, but who can put a price on happiness Wink

I had the same thought about the hours. It should just be broken in and I hope it is well serviced. Maybe there is a manufacture date on the tubes somewhere.

I have an ECP4100 with HD-6 lenses (I think). But they can't fit on the 701, can they?

I'm gonna use it for whole different setup. Is there some kind of "factory reset" of all settings?

The laserdisc is a Pioneer LD-V3400D. I don't think it has been in use for quite some time but it fired up without any problems. Single side player and no remote. It has RGB output though.
The only "problem" is that I have to buy a laserdiscmovie, but I have found Terminator2 in an auction that I think I will bid on.

The 701s uses the larger Toshiba tubes. THe plain 701 used either 07MS or SD187 depending on the age, same as the ECP.

I got a Sony here with around 60,000 hours on it. It ran 16hrs + almost every day for abit over 10 yrs. Even the red is cooked. Those tubes were mega soft too. Still goes fine now with new tubes in it....

But the lenses could be directly swapped.. Does the barco have any color filtering (tinting)? If you swap the lenses it's better to put up some tinted lenses.

PRobably not on the 701s, but it depends on the tubes. If they are the Sony tubes, then they already have the tinting in them, if they are Toshibas, then no, and then yes, swap the lenses. Just shine a flashlight into the lenses, and you'll see whether the tubes or lenses already have tinting.

I took some picture of tubefaces with lenses off. There is masking on the tubes.
It don't have straight edges. Could the PJ have been used on some curved screen?

Otherwise, maybe 6-7 in tube wear rating. Not bad after so many hours. All tubes are the same.

still good for some viewing if you stay withing the mask Smile

but crts are not that rare in europe... it's just some people asking silly prices for worn out sets.
the worst set i bought was of an crt ethusiast and it died within a week - controller dead !
but i have not spend more than 330€ on a crt and my last one is a 9500lc ultra with all the modding and stuff...

you just have to wait for the right moment and than grab it Very Happy
