I picked up a couple of Audiosource Amp 100's that I am using in bridged mode for some front effect speakers on my system. Nice little amps for price but problem is that on the power up it pops the speakers.

I want to install some high current relays on the output of the amp to delay the the signal path to the speakers to eliminate this pop. Anyone done this or have any suggestions on what relays will work best. Amps are rated at 150wpc in the bridge mode that I am using.

Thanks,
EJ

It sounds like those amps don't have any internal protection?

The relays aren't really too important. If you pop the covers of any amp with speaker protection relays, you'll see they're pretty small. Any relay with a 10 amp set of contacts is fine. You'll need to build a delay timer though to not kick the relay in for 5-10 seconds after the power is applied. A 555 timer will work great for that.

Cool thanks Curt for the knowledge.

I looked it up on line and looks like a relatively easy circuit to put together. It looks like you adjust the timing by putting a cap (100-220uf) on the trigger pin and a protection diode(1N4004) backwards between output and relay to prevent inductive voltage back feeding into the IC. Let me know if I am on the right track here.

I have boxes of old marquee boards out in my shop. Off hand do you think there are any timers on any of the marquee boards or is this something I can pick up at rat shack before going to mauser or digikey?

Thanks again,
EJ

Edit too funny: Not sure if this was coincidence or if Kal has built in some code into the site for ads but Mouser ad on top of post....Digikey on the bottom. LOL

Dunno if Radio Shack will still have that, but give it a try. I'd order from one of the online suppliers.

Not coincidence, but not Kal, either. It's Google AdWords... Automatically serves up relevant advertising based on page content. It seems to creep people out, but I always tell them it's better than seeing ads for hemorrhoid care or feminine hygiene products on an electronics forum. Wink

Mars makes solid state timers about 2" square and 1/2 " thick. There's a hole in the middle for mounting. 2 spade connectors and a dial. twist the dial to the time you want.
I buy them from any HVAC wholesaler

No point being pessimistic; it probably would't work anyway.

There are a couple kits on the market as well to build a speaker delay. A quick google turned up this:

Might help in your application.
