I imagine that this works and is so cheap because the AV/Component/Composite output of the PS3 is analog and thus another device to convert from hdmi to analog is not necessary.
Or would I be better off with a hdmi cable and then a (much more expensive) device that converts hdmi to analog like a Moome or HD fury?

Oh you have an XG. You may have issues at 1080p ( 1080p digital timings have porches too small for some CRT projectors )
BUT yes that's a great deal. Plus the HDMI output of the PS3 is better than the component.

What XG? A couple models have component on them.
The other item in the first post will depend on your console, if its a model that puts out RGB-S then yes, itll likely work.

I looked around a bit at the PS3's VGA cable. Seems they are sending component over VGA. Not useful when you need RGBHV or RGBS

Dont think the 1351 has component. Have a look in the signal entry menu.
If not, i dont see how that VGA adaptor as they call it could work on any monitor if its only component.
At 1080i, component will look just as good as HDMI on a PS3, you cant do 1080p via component at all as far as i know.

HDMI looks much better than Component on the PS3. I've done the A/B on that one at 1080i. This was on the 60GB PS3.
There are TV's that can take 1080p over component though I don't know of anything that outputs that off the top of my head.

You're more likely to find a used HDFury or external Moome box but post in the Buy and Sell and see what comes up.

There is only 50MHz bandwidth there so itll look pretty streaky at 1080p

The only sources ive seen that output 1080p from digital 100 MHz component is some AVRs, two of my 3 H/Ks do, but its YCbCr, not the YPbPr that is output from the PS3.

YPbPr or analog component video has 50MHz bandwidth.
