Today's score off CL Pioneer's top of the line RT-909 reel to reel. Almost mint cosmetically, heads awesome, 1 channel low in output. I'm guessing dirty heads. 
With 9 10 1/2" tapes..$350.
Loved the guy's setup. A Chinese guy, late 50s maybe.
Didn't look at the CD player, but he had a Dynaco tube preamp and power amp, AR3ax speakers, Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck, and a second Nak that was also high end, with all biasing done automatically, a Thorens turntable, and he was playing jazz.
Last time I heard one of the 3ax speakers was in grade 8, in 1976, and I thought they were wonderful then.
I gotta find me a pair (of speakers..Aholes!  ) and put them to use!

Havent heard of a AR-3ax, but I have 2 pairs of AR-3a speakers and I think they sound phenomenal for an old speaker, I dont have room to use them at the moment, but my little AR-4ax speakers I use every day, just amazing!!
Nice find on the RT-909, the tape... well id keep an eye out on sticky shed leaving tape residue in the tape path. Though I have found most 10" reel tapes survive the test of time better than 7" tapes, still a great find!!

Jeremy- ever heard of tape baking? Google that, the first hit or two has methods on how to do it, and yes it works fine. My genuine RONCO food dehydrator is used weekly for tapes and drying PC boards out of the dishwasher.

Check the extras on the 1997 re-release of Star Wars. They needed to get all the original sounds the folly crew collected off the reel to reel tapes to re-do a 5.1 surround sound. They went back to the original tapes and put them in the RonCo food dehydrator. They even show one tape they left too long. It was slightly warped.

:O I still have my RONCO Dehydrator!! Popeil knew how to make em! I will have to give that a try since I have a load of 7" ampex reel tape that needs some help.
How long does one do the dehydrating?

I do it 8-12 hours, overnight in other words. Some people do as short as 2 hours, others longer. THere seems to be no issue with the low radiant heat of the dehydrator leaving them in longer.
ONLY do the tapes that clog the heads. A bit of shedding is pretty normal, and a recording engineer told me that studios used to clean heads 3 times a day, so even back in the 70s, tapes always shed some. It's the backcoated ones that shed and can cause the guides to squeal like a banshee that work when baked.
Mind you, several ne'er do wells here do well when baked as well apparently.
If the taped material isn't priceless, bake the tapes, burn them to CD (not MP3!), then sell them on eBay.
