I am helping a friend try and find a subwoofer. Episode has a 12" that is in the budget and also has had some nice commercial reviews. He wanted a Paradigm DSP-3200 but it was discontinued this past year for a new junky version IMHO. That being said his budget is in the $800 or less Canadian range.

I was wondering if any of you have had real world exprience with this brand and know of any Canadian dealers?

I though I read somebody was either selling or was using a set of in ceilings from them but was not 100% sure.

James

I want to get The Outlaw Audio LFM-1EX. Same price range and also good reviews. A little lower in base response but not by much.

James just saw this on AVS. SVS has a new 10" sub that is suppose to be pretty damn good.

http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box/pb-1000#.UMP_1bTg5A4

499 Shipped!!! I might get one and then another latter on down the road.
Or I might get the SB12 NDS..http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/sealed-box/sb12-nsd#.UMQAsLTg5A4

My old Velodyne VX1012 is tired, and only 80 watts.

Plus I heard cliffs more expensive SVS subs and I must say they were awesome. I forgot which models he has.

So here is another option.

Nash,

Funny you should mention that. When poking around I discovered the SVS 12" as well. I did not think that SVS had a sub in that price range. I was under the impression that SVS only had high end models beyond what my friends budget was set at.

I have found that there is a distributor an hour or so from me in the Toronto area and we will be going up sometime in the next while to grab one up for him.

So James how does he like the Sub?

I am thinking of dual SVS subs. But I want the best of both worlds.
Ported for Movies and Sealed for music. So I was thinking one of each.

The PB 12 NSD and the SB 12 NSD.

What do you guys think?

Athanasios

He decided on the sub a little late. We ordered it but are still waiting on their stock shipment to come in.

I do not use my sub for music but your theory is sound. I prefer sealed boxes in the car audio world as they tend to produce a sound that is more controlled and tighter. Ported boxes can have a boomy depending on the design but still can produce a tight punch. Ported can also play lower and louder though.

While listening to music in my system my sub is barely on as I prefer to not be able to localize the sound from the sub. It is loud enough just to add the final dimension to the sound. Music relies so much more on quality mid bass then sub bass. If the mid bass is lacking you will notice a huge hole in the sound where as if sub bass is lacking you will be much less critical. It just adds to the depth, sometime hurting the sound quality depending on the recording IMHO.

Thanks James so you think two different sub types will work together while listening to music and then for movies? Just want to be sure.

I don't want to turn one off for movies and one off for music, I want them both on at the same time.

Personally I would think that you would be fine with Ported alone. You will most likely turn them down when listening to music I would think or at least I know I would. You will want the lower end extension that you will get from the ported in movies.

In the review of the ported that I read on audioholics it seemed that the reviewer was happy with how musical the sub was.

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/subwoofers/pb12-nsd/pb12-nsd-listening-session

I wish I had some seat time with it in my system and have been contemplating the sale of my single Paradigm DSP-3400 and getting a pair of the PB12-NSD's myself. Although I will be concentrating on getting my pre/pro and amplifier decision made and then Pioneer AVR sold first.

See thats the thing. Dual SB 12 NSD's are 1149 shipped. I great price I think. the PB 12 NSD is 749 shipped. SO i was hoping SVS would do some sort of deal with what I wanted.

My room is big volume wise. 15.4x30x8.6. Almost 4000 cubic feet. A single PB 12 NSD will be pushing it. I was thinking the dual SB 12's would do the job but not go as deep. So that why i thought of this combo.

And I am Set on SVS. Wink

They will do a combo deal on any sub from what I was told. I think the sales guy said it was equal to a 5% discount per or something to that effect.

Give it a shot and see what they say. I do not think you could go wrong with an SVS product.

You know james looking at the specs I might even be happy with the PB1000 and and SB12 NSD. they both have the same top end frequency response of 270hz and match better in that regard to the PB12 NSD which goes up to 150hz.

I wonder if that will make a difference.

I have those Phase tech PC 800's i got used earlier this year but have no idea what the specs are for them.

I need that info as well to find a good cross over point for the subs.

Will you honestly be crossing over much higher then 85Hz though?

I think if you feel that you need a sub that will possibly play higher you might want to consider EQing the mid range to taste versus raising the crossover point of the sub. My fear in raising it would be the possibility to create a muddy or wavy uncontrolled sub bass. This is for music though. I am not sure what effect it would have in a theater environment but feel it would possibly cause a sloppy mess.

Good points. I was probbaly going to go at a 60hz cross over . I found a review for my PC 800HO's on ebay. Might buy it to find out the response. I am sure it goes down low. I need to pull out my Audio disc and shut my Velodyne Sub of to see how low these go.

Thanks James.

Well not to be rude, but thats like if i tell you ill buy a 8500AC to try make a blend or a stack with my 9500LC..
You need 2 identical subs, buy them new together.. beat them up 200 hours + together, and put them close to the wall in a symmetrical setup, and i promise you will never return to a single sub setup ever again.. Wink
