I have a Samsung HP-S5053 (50") plasma display that randomly turns off. The top seemed hotter than normal.
So I'm thinking power supply. So everything I've read online says probability the caps on the PS.
So is it worth replacing the caps or should I just order a complete PS?

Change the caps. A new PS is too expensive, and a used one on eBay will have the same caps go bad in due time.

Curt,
How likely is it for a diode or FET to go along with the caps?
Is it possible to check transistors on the board or do they need to be removed to check?

Any failure is possible, without a meter and some measurements, I'd just be guessing. I know later Samsung LCD TVs had a series of bad caps, not sure about the older plasmas.
It can also be the CPU board, so you're really guessing. Generally speaking (not always though), caps will show signs of capacitor leakage or the tops bursting, so that might give some idea.

No obvious signs which board or component is bad.
I probably unplugged it too soon.
I should have performed a smoke test.
